PMP vs Prince2 Certification: Which one to go with?

by Vinsys Course Your Trusted Training And Certification Partner

Project management is and will remain a basic skill.

Every aspect of any professional role can be seen as part of project management and/or implementation. To get the mandatory skills it is necessary for a successful future, it is important to invest in further training and education.

There are various methods as well as certifications in the world of project management, but the most famous are PMP® and PRINCE2®. We usually get asked about the differences between the two certificates, so we decided to give you all the information by comparing the key elements of the two certificates.

PRINCE2 (Projects In Control Environment):

PRINCE2 is an integrated project management methodology that provides a set of processes and issues applicable to project management from start to finish. PRINCE2 provides a model for what needs to be done, who needs to do it, and when it needs to be done.

PMP (Professional Project Management):

PMP, short for Project Management Professional, is the standard, "Knowledge Base" (PMBOK). It has "everything" you need to know and to work upon in project management. PMP covers a variety of project management skills and techniques that project managers may need to use, such as: Leadership and negotiation.

PMP certification was developed and issued by the Project Management Institute (PMI), an authoritative body in the field of project management.

Difference between PRINCE2 and PMP

The main difference is that PRINCE2 is a methodology, PMP is considered a treasure trove of knowledge.

The PRINCE2 method can guide you and tell you how to work on your project. It also offers templates that you can use or customize to fit your project and your organization's needs, To help you achieve your goals,

On the other hand, PMP provides a framework, a set of project management knowledge.

It offers a number of techniques and tools that you can apply as needed.

This means that PMP certification proves mastery of project management skills and techniques, while PRINCE2 certification proves the ability to manage projects according to the PRINCE2 method in a controlled manner.

Example. To create a plan in PRINCE2 you need to evaluate the activity - there are different techniques you can use depending on the project, but PRINCE2 doesn't say what these are.

Instead, PMBOK provides an explanation and analysis of available assessment techniques so you can choose the most appropriate for your project.

Comparison of PMP and PRINCE2

Applicability

  • Both certificates can be requested for any type of project.

  • Both are standard and can be customized or customized as needed.

Importance and diffusion

  • Both are certainly two important and well-known certificates that are recognized by the world. In general, PRINCE2 is more common in Europe and PMP is more common in the United States. Both certificates may be required to participate in public procurement.

  • On a more individual level, both can enhance and impact resumes and professional careers.

Certification levels and requirements

PRINCE2 has two levels: PRINCE2 Foundation & PRINCE2 Practitioner.

The basic level contains the theoretical part of the method, so it serves to provide methodology understanding. There are no specific requirements for this level, but experience in project management is recommended. Foundation Certification does not expire and is a prerequisite for access to the next level, Practitioner.

The Practitioner degree offers the opportunity to understand the application of methods in practice. Practitioner certification lasts for 3 years. To access it, you need one of the following certificates:

  • PRINCE2 Foundation,

  • PMP,

  • CAP,

  • IPMA.

Of course, we recommend certification from the PRINCE2 Foundation certification, as it makes sense to know the methods and then be able to apply them.

The PMP consists of certification levels and has clear requirements. In order to take the exam at the Institute for Project Management (PMI), you must provide evidence of at least 35 hours of training and experience in project management.

Specific:

  • those who have a diploma must have a minimum of 4500 hours experience in project management for a minimum of 3 years

  • for people with a high school diploma who have a minimum of 5 years of project management experience of at least 7500 hours.

Exam:

The PRINCE2 exam for official certificates can only be taken through the ATO (Accredited Training Organization). ATO is accredited by Axelos. The ATO typically offers PRINCE2 training courses that include the PRINCE2 Foundation and PRINCE2 Practitioner certification examination.

The PMP exam mandatorily needs to be taken on Pearson Vue centres, the only one PMI-approved for the testing section. Exams must be ordered through PMI, otherwise, exam preparation courses can be completed at the R.T.P (registered training provider) of PMI or other educational institutions.

The core is a certificate proving 35 hours of training (contact hours).

PRINCE2 and PMP Summing up:

PMP and PRINCE2 certificates are certainly different from each other, but they have the same goal: to increase project success.

Choosing someone else should be based on several factors, which may include your personal professional needs. You really need to know if you are looking for a methodology that can help you improve your project management or if you are more curious to learn the ins and outs of project management.

Another important aspect that could influence your choice between PMP and PRINCE2 is your company's current methodology. But market needs, personal growth and general governance can also influence your decisions.

Of course, the two certificates are compatible: if you have a PMP certificate, it makes sense to learn the PRINCE2 method. Likewise, after receiving the PRINCE2 certificate, you can read the PMBOK guide and evaluate the PMP certification to demonstrate your knowledge

and skills and experience in project management.
