Playlisting: A New Player in Your Digital Marketing Campaign

by Jason French Digital Marketing specialist

After each release, you need a thought-out game plan, a campaign to maximize your music promotion game. Here’s a sample plan:

  1. Set up your accounts: Make sure to set up all you accounts on target platforms, make sure they’re up-to-date, with current photos, links and bios, populated with your music and music you like to listen to. This shows that you’re part of the community. And start sharing these pages on social media, through newsletters, on your website and blog.

  2. Start following on-genre playlists: Go and track down the leading playlists in your genre and start following and interacting with them. Get a feel of who holds influence in your genre, genuinely be interested in what they are posting about. Music Pr comes down to doing a lot of networking in the process. And by checking out their playlists will help learn a thing or two about who the right people are to approach!

  3. Reach out to influencers: Before your song goes public on the streaming platforms, send a personal note with a private link to the new track to your target playlist curators. Some of these may be tastemakers or media who curate great lists. Grab their contacts and reach out to them, asking for suggestions on who you can send your music to, to be considered for the playlist genre that best fits your music.

  4. Build solid relationships with your contacts: Once you’ve found some like-minded curators, keep track of these contacts. Ask them for feedback on new material before it gets released and bring them into your band’s family. When you get featured on a playlist by one of these people be sure to shout out on your social platforms to thank them. Or you could even promote a Facebook post, or buy an ad on Twitter or Facebook, to further promote your music that you are featured on the list.

  5. Start curating playlists yourself: Not only will your fans love to hear what you’re listening to, you will be a part of the community and build esteem with the influencers. It doesn’t have to be a one-way street; if you feature a band you love, they might just return the favor on their playlist.
