Pest Prevention Measures to Take This Holiday.

by Jacqueline Ruck Writer, Blogger

If you drive or walk down any American street right now, you will realize that the holiday mood has already checked in. people are busy decorating their houses with Christmas trees, wreaths, and holiday lights. Some of these decorations are bought from the stores while others are from the attic where they were stored after last year’s holiday. As people go about their decorations, they do not realize that they allow pests to get into their homes.

Nobody wants to ruin the fun that comes with the holidays, and the fact is that pests are a nuisance. It will therefore help if you work hard toward the prevention of a pest invasion in your home. But how do you do this?

5 Tips to Avoid Pests This Holiday

1. Check your decorations before hanging them.

As stated earlier, holiday decorations are the biggest culprit for bringing pests to your home. To avoid this, ensure that you inspect the decorations before hanging them. The best way to ensure that they do not have any pests is to clean them using soapy water or alcohol wipes.

2. Keep your kitchen clean.

A dirty kitchen is a hub for bacteria, germs, and other unwanted microorganisms. The holidays involve a lot of making and cooking different meals. If the food particles are left unattended, it won’t take long before pests such as roaches are your regular visitors. To avoid such scenarios, do not store food on the floor and deep clean your kitchen regularly.

3. Invest in enclosed storage containers.

If you have holiday decorations that you will not be used, ensure that you store them in the right way. The right way means storing them in enclosed storage boxes. By the way, it would help if you invested in plastic storage totes as they are not prone to dampness and pests. Rodents can chew cardboard, and that means they will get into your things. Although plastic totes might seem expensive, it is a pest control investment that will pay off after some time.

4. Take care of the garbage.

Please note that any decaying matter in your trash bin is a targeted meal for pests. Garbage should be emptied regularly and spotlessly cleaned to avoid the infestation of pests in your home. Here are a few tips you can use to manage your garbage.

Rinse any food particles on the containers before placing them in your garbage bin.

Have a specific bin for your food-related items.

Please take out the trash before it gets an odor.

Invest in a metallic bin with a tight lid

Odor neutralizers also help keep pests away.

5. Seal any entry points to your house.

Pests from the outside will get access to your home through cracks, gaps, and openings. To avoid this:

Walk around your home looking for areas that would serve as an entry point for the pests.

Ensure that you seal the small cracks using caulk. If there are any significant gaps between the wood or concrete, fill them with foam or steel wool.

Cover the large openings using a large mesh so that even the tiniest pest will not come into your house. You can also pour some ficam bait in the cracks, gaps, and openings.

Ficam Bait is a granule insecticide used to control crawling pests such as flies, ants, and cockroaches.

With these tips, you are guaranteed that you will enjoy your holiday without much worry. If the uninvited guests are already in your house, call in a pest control professional, and they will eliminate them. AmericanPest got you!
