This show about millennial nostalgia is set in the year 2000 and revolves around the life of two awkward middle school girls. Anna and Maya pledge to share all the significant moments of their teenage lives together.

What’s astonishing about the show is the fact that the actors are actually 30-year-old women posing as their 13-year-old selves. This transformation is not only limited to changing their hairstyles and costumes but also manages to seep into their body language.

Anna Konkle and Maya Erskine have given such a convincing performance as thirteen-year-olds that if the viewer was unaware of their actual age while watching the show, they’d never figure it out.

“PEN15” brings the viewers it’s own version of humour with a promise to induce some serious laughter. It showcases bittersweet moments about letting go of your childhood and learning to define yourself. What makes the show feel even more real is that Anna and Maya were actually thirteen years old back in 2000. The show actually draws on their personal experiences and well-remembered memories. In addition to this, Maya’s mother in the show, Mutsuko is actually her biological mother in real life.

Anna’s character has a cheerful, bubbly personality that attempts to even out the reality of the strained marriage that her parents are struggling with. Maya is outgoing with an eccentric side that works well as a defence mechanism. There are moments where they are possessed by their adolescent side and others where they regress into being young children.

Viewers have been dropping multiple messages thanking Maya and Anna for how easily relatable the show was and for making them feel understood. In creating the show, Anna and Maya were surprised by how intense it felt to be reliving their past experiences. It gave them a sense of closure by simply acknowledging what they had gone through.

The title of the show PEN15′ is a result of a school prank that doesn’t really have anything more to do with the show. Through most of it, the show is about adolescent friendship at its best and will find its way into your heart.

The series premiered in the month of February 2019. After a successful first season on Hulu, the show is set to launch its second season on the 18th of September 2020. Season 2 is said to have a total of 14 episodes that will be divided into two parts. The first seven will be released on the given date in September, and the rest will follow in 2021.

After leaving the viewers wanting more in the first season, the second will show the two best friends navigating through some more experiences later in their lives. There are going to be pool parties, school theatre dramas, sleepovers and much more!
