Ovulation Induction: a mini review

by Shivani Sachdev Founder & Director

Ovulation Induction is the process in which women with irregular or absent ovulation (anovulation) has been treated by using medications to stimulate ovulation. According to the survey conducted by National Institutes of Health, approximately 25 to 30 percent suffering with infertility have problems with their ovulation. Normal ovulation occurs in women when the ovary releases a mature egg in so that the egg to be fertilized successfully in coming days. During a woman’s menstrual cycle, ovulation occurs generally once every 28 days. However, intervals ovulation of 21 to 35 days is acceptable and shows the sign of normal ovulation. The mature egg and any other tissues are wiped out and cleared naturally from the uterus if the fertilization failed to happen. The ovulation considered to be irregular if it is unpredictable or occurred less than once every 35 days. It is considered to be Oligoovulation if ovulation is unpredictable. It is known as anovulation if it doesn’t occur at all.

Ovulatory problems impact fertility in a greater extent by cutting down the predictability of ovulation and the availability of a potential egg. The main goal of Ovulation Induction is to enhance the chances of a woman to get pregnant either through timed intercourse or artificial insemination or any other fertility procedure. The most common causes of failure to ovulation are weight fluctuations, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) or stress. Other reasons can be counted as disorders of the pituitary gland, raised prolactin levels and thyroid gland. In some cases, failure of ovulation can be resulted by ovarian failure. This can also happen by cancer treatment or by premature ovarian failure.

It involved the treatment with fertility hormones to stimulate the ovaries to produce a mature follicle, after this treatment timed Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) or intercourse or Artificial Insemination (AI) can be followed to help the successful ovulation. But there is also a real risk associated with this treatment, the production of multiple follicle and multiple pregnancies as most of the women with PCOS often react very sensitively to fertility drugs. For minimizing this risk, doctors keep monitoring with hormone measurements and ultrasound to ensure only one or two follicles are developing. Ovulation Induction is normally combined with intrauterine insemination (IUI) and performed with injectable medications or ingested medications. Mostly the patients who take advantages from Ovulation Induction are couples with ovarian dysfunction, unexplained infertility, PCOS or endometriosis. To take infertility treatment with ovulation induction, the patient must have at least one normal fallopian tube, a normal uterine cavity and the male partner must have a normal sperm count.
