Oral Health Guidelines for Pregnant Women

by John H. Dentist
Being pregnant is an exciting time in life. Just the idea of bringing someone new into the world is something that many women wait their entire lives for. However, it’s important to remember that pregnancy is an equally important time to be extra cautious when it comes to healthcare and staying healthy. This is especially true when it comes to the brushing of teeth and keeping a clean oral foundation. Here are some oral health guidelines for pregnant women, in order to make for a healthy environment for their baby. Following these guidelines will prepare you for a much healthier time while pregnant.

More Frequent Brushing

Most people should be brushing their teeth at least twice a day. When you are pregnant, it doesn’t hurt to increase that number even more. Ideally, expecting mothers should be brushing their teeth as often as they are eating meals. After each meal, a quick brush can do wonders for the overall quality of health inside of a expecting mothers mouth. Brushing teeth more routinely when pregnant will allow for getting rid of leftover food in the mouth, which otherwise can lead to the development of bacteria or other issues when unseen to.

Oral Checkups

Pregnant women are more likely to visit their doctor much more frequently when pregnant than they would if they were not expecting. This is because they want to ensure that their child is growing healthily and that everything is going as it should at each stage of development. Therefore, expecting mothers should also consider going to the dentist more frequently, in order to get checkups to evaluate the overall quality of oral health. Seeing your dentists much more often during pregnancy can ensure that you do not have health concerns, such as gingivitis, oral lesions, tooth erosion or any other problems.

Quickly Resolving Issues

In the event that you do have oral health issues that are discovered when getting your oral checkups, it’s vital that they are seen to quickly. The more that an expecting mother leaves her oral health unseen to, the more problematic it can become for the overall quality of the pregnancy period. Because of the changes that are occurring to the body during pregnancy, expecting mothers are much more susceptible to oral concerns. This can include changing the alignment of the teeth, periodontitis, epulis of pregnancy and more. However, all of these problems can be resolved by quickly resolving any issues before they become more of a concern.

Your mouth and oral cavity is the entrance to your body. Everything that goes in the mouth is then transferred to a developing child inside a mothers body. Because of this, it is vital that the mouth is clean and is not transferring any bacteria or other debris to the child. The best way to ensure that this doesn’t happen is to make for as clean of an oral foundation as possible. Expecting mothers can do that by brushing their teeth more frequently, visiting their dentist more routinely and resolving small issues before they become large problems.
