This is a farmer's story. He had an old mule. One day the mule fell into the farmer's empty, dry well.

The mule was crying for help, the farmer observed the situation. This mule served the farmer faithfully for many years. Years later, the farmer ruthlessly decided that neither the mule nor the well was worth the trouble. So, he decided that instead of pulling the heavy mule out of the well, he should bury it in it.

The farmer started throwing garbage into that open well. When the first shovelful of garbage fell on the mule, he panicked. 'What is this?' he thought. When the farmer threw the second shovel, he started crying. 'How could a farmer do this to me?' he wondered.

આ એક ખેડૂતની વાત છે. તેની પાસે એક જૂનું ખચ્ચર હતું. એક દિવસ એ ખચ્ચર ખેડૂતના ખાલી, સૂકા કૂવામાં પડી ગયું હતું.

ખચ્ચર મદદ માટે બૂમો પાડી રહ્યું હતું, ખેડૂતે પરિસ્થિતિનું નિરીક્ષણ કર્યું. આ ખચ્ચરે ઘણા વર્ષો સુધી ખેડૂતની નિષ્ઠાપૂર્વક સેવા કરી હતી. વર્ષો પછી, ખેડૂતે નિર્દયી નિર્ણય કર્યો કે ખચ્ચર અથવા તો કૂવો બંને મુશ્કેલી ઊભી કરે તે યોગ્ય નથી. તેથી, તેણે નક્કી કર્યું કે, કૂવામાંથી ભારેખમ ખચ્ચરને બહાર કાઢવાને બદલે, તે તેને તેમાં જ દફન કરી દેવું જોઇએ.

ખેડૂતે એ ખુલ્લા કૂવામાં કચરો ફેંકવાનું શરૂ કર્યું. જ્યારે કચરાનો પ્રથમ પાવડો ખચ્ચર પર પડ્યો ત્યારે તે ગભરાઈ ગયો. ‘આ શું છે?’ તેણે વિચાર્યું. જ્યારે બીજો પાવડો ખેડૂતે નાખ્યો ત્યારે તે રડવા લાગ્યો. ‘ખેડૂત મારી સાથે આવું કેમ રીતે કરી શકે?’ તેને આશ્ચર્ય થયું.

જ્યારે ત્રીજો પાવડો તેના પર પડ્યો ત્યારે તેને આખી વાત સમજાઈ ગઈ. જોકે, ખચ્ચરે નક્કી કર્યું કે, તે પોતાની જાતને જીવતો દફન થવા દેશે નહીં. જેમ જેમ તેના પર કચરો પડવા લાગ્યો તે તેને ખંખેરીને ઊભો રહી જતો હતો. તેના પર કચરો ફેંકાતા અંતે તે હતાશ થતો ગયો અને દર્દ અનુભવતો
