=======================

The golden mean is the moral standard of Confucianism, and Confucius regards the golden mean as the highest philosophy.

Zhu Xi said: "The middle is the right way in the world, and the mediocre is the theorem of the world."

The essence is: impartiality, no extremes, adjust measures to time, material conditions, event conditions, and local conditions.

But it is Lin Yutang who really puts the golden mean into practice.

At the age of 17, he graduated from Xiamen Xunyuan College with second place and was admitted to Shanghai St. John's University. Four years later, he also graduated with second place and was invited to teach at Tsinghua University.

In our opinion, although the second place also represents a good result, it always seems to be thumping and sighing.

As if only a few steps away, he could climb the enviable sparkling peak. There is quite a pity of "Since Yu Sheng, He Shengliang".

Moreover, whether it is an exam or a competition, people will always remember the second to none.

Although the second place is only one step away from the first place, people will be forgotten, and they will always live on the periphery of the spotlight, in a place that is not embarrassing or awkward.

But in Lin Yutang's view, the second is the highest wisdom and realm.

He always believes that although the second is not as attractive as the first, it stands out from the crowd. But they are in a situation where they can advance, retreat and defend. Unlike the first place where they dominate the crowd, the second place tends to be more relaxed and easy to come and go, without paying attention to the eyes of others.

Lin Yutang's doctrine of the mean is also reflected in his "semi-cynic" attitude.

In "Art in Life", he commented on "semi-cynicism":

I think the semi-cynic is the most superior cynic. This doctrine refers to an orderly life between two extremes. This kind of doctrine finds a complete balance between action and stillness. Therefore, ideal people should be half famous and half unknown; work hard while being lazy, and be lazy while working hard. I believe that this middle-class life is the most sound ideal life the Chinese have found.

Naturally, Lin Yutang is also a senior "semi-cynicist" who never fights continuously in writing. He usually takes a vacation for one or two months after writing a work, devoting himself to a leisurely vacation.

The well-known health expert Hong Zhaoguang once said: “The key to health preservation is balance. You can neither over-press yourself, nor relax and suspend oneself, but find a balance between the two and combine work and rest. It is counterproductive, and in the long run, it is tantamount to drinking poison to quench thirst."

After you have climbed a mountain, don't think about how to cross the next one. You might as well stop and admire the fragrance of birds and flowers at the foot of the mountain, and the grass grows with warblers.

After replenishing your energy, you will find that not only is your body and mind happy, your own efficiency may not be reduced.

Second, the unfailing "childlike heart"

Lin Yutang maintained a naive and casual attitude throughout his life, even when he was old, he looked like an "old urchin". He says:

I came into this world like a child entering a big jungle. From time to time, he stopped to look up at the stars and the moon, and looked down at the insects and flowers. During the journey in the jungle, he had no direction, no rules, wandering alone, walking or stopping, whatever he wanted, everything started from his own instinct.

And what he is most proud of is the innocence in his body that has not been wiped out. He commented that "a little innocence is still invincible, and there is no half of the white temple."

Even at the age of 80, he loves to play with his grandchildren. He cuts out photos of himself when he was a child and put them together with the photos of his two grandchildren, which he named "Three Children".

In the Ming Dynasty, Li Zhi put forward the "children's mind". The so-called "children's mind" is the heart of a pure child, and the "primitive mind of one thought" is an absolutely sincere mind without pretentiousness.

Childlike innocence is the most precious kind of attitude.

Being childlike does not mean ignorant, ignorant and naive. But even if I see through the prosperity of the world, I still maintain the love for the world, the hope for life, the pursuit and yearning for new things.

Observing the people around me carefully, I found that most interesting people have a "childlike heart".

They love life and show great interest and desire to explore all new things. And their sunny smiles and positive attitude towards life are also an important reason for increasing their favorability.

In Mr. Jin Yong's "The Legend of the Condor Heroes", many readers have shown great interest in the old naughty boy Zhou Botong.

Because he has no scheming and naive. All his kung fu is "playing".

About him, there is a description like this:

He does things completely regardless of the causes and consequences, and returns in his own spirits. Sometimes he is a shark rider on the sea with long winds and waves, and sometimes bets with people to chase the extreme poverty. The whole world is a huge playground for him.

Lin Yutang and Zhou Botong have similarities in their bodies. Although they are both highly admired by future generations because of their achievements, they disapprove at all. Although they have the appearance of big people, they don't have the work of big people. Think of fame as something outside the body.

This kind of innocence, this kind of open-mindedness allows them to swim freely between heaven and earth, not tired of mundane things, and not worried about labor.

3. Philosophy in "Eating"

1. "Complement each other" of ingredients

Lin Yutang has always been very particular about "eating", and he also has a set of methods for cooking.

For example, when he talked about the two dishes of fried pork with bamboo shoots and boiled chicken with cabbage, he said:

Bamboo shoots and pork are cooked together to make the meat more fragrant. At the same time, bamboo shoots are more delicious because they absorb the aroma of pork. The same goes for boiled chicken with cabbage. The taste of chicken penetrates into the cabbage, and the taste of cabbage penetrates into the chicken, complementing each other.

The seemingly simple recipes contain the principles of mutual promotion, mutual reconciliation, and mutual benefit.

Whether it is cooking or doing things, it is necessary to consider the characteristics of configurable resources as much as possible, so that the combination of them can generate maximum benefits.

2. Look at personality in "eating"

Lin Yutang's attitude towards food is highly appreciated.

He is a crab lover, and in "Mom in Peking" he also wrote the details of the character Mo Chou eating crabs:

"She ate every part of the crab cleanly, so her plate was thin, white, like glass, and like transparent shells."

He believes that those who like to eat expensive foods such as crabs and chicken feet tend to be more tenacious and tenacious in life, richer in life, and more able to withstand setbacks. Such people are often keen on Enjoy life and dare to challenge.

Because this kind of food is harder to eat, but there is not much content. But some people like this "exploration" process and don't pay much attention to the "results" that are eaten in.

Therefore, in many cases, the greatest happiness in life is not what you have, but the process of pursuing it.

3. "Eat" and "Idiot"

In Lin Yutang's "Biography of Su Dongpo", Su Dongpo benefited the people during his administration and was respected and loved by the people of Hangzhou.

The Dongpo meat he invented is more delicate and delicious. It has been passed down to this day and has become a famous dish in Hangzhou.

Many "Dongpo meats" today have no real names. Although the methods are similar to those of the archaic people, their raw materials are lacking. "Clenbuterol" and "Glued meat" are popular. In this case, the pure "Dongpo" "Meat" is rare.

Moreover, today when fast food and takeaway are the mainstream, people are not so concerned about and particular about "eating", and their appreciation and taste for food are constantly being dull.

Lin Yutang believes that the solemn attitude towards "eating" has created the unique pedigree of our nation. The fineness of China's requirements for food since ancient times also reflects the breadth and depth of food culture.

The "obsession" with food does not refer to reckless overeating, but the love of food culture, the pursuit of a better life, and the unsuccessful.

"Infatuation" has become a commendatory word here. If there is no obsessiveness in the face of something, how can there be a deep hobby, desire for exploration, and taste for appreciation?

4. Lowering the "posture"

Lin Yutang admires Laozi's life wisdom in "seeking a low place".

The word "low" in the so-called "seek low" is not the "low" of "life trough", but the "low" of "low-key convergence".

Low profile is a means of self-protection.

If a person is too ostentatious, it will inevitably arouse the envy of others and become "a target of public criticism."

Napoleon, the "God of War", once assumed an unbeatable attitude, and said to his men with pride: "I am taller than the Alps."

But his final outcome?

It was defeated in the war of Waterloo and eventually fell to a desert island and turned into a pile of dead bones.

Smart people never show off.

They work in a low-key manner. When others talked, talked, and talked, they worked hard in secret, and then suddenly came to a "gorgeous turn" when everyone hadn't expected it.

A low-key person, his performance will never be greater than his ability.

Mao Dun once said: "Only the humility of bamboo, the tenacity of cowhide, and the passion of fire can produce truly immortal art."

A real master like Lin Yutang never puts himself in a very high position in anticipation of others' admiration.

In his autobiographical novel "Lai Boying", he shows his "highland life outlook": the height of the mountains and the realm of mountains outside the mountains make the individual appear extremely small in front of him. This sense of humility makes people full in front of the world The heart of awe.

This kind of thinking has cultivated his unassuming, low-profile, round and soft character.

Lowering your stance is not to suppress yourself, but to be able to understand the self more clearly; not to flatter and flatter, but to treat people and things around you with a humble attitude; not to be inferior and cowardly, but to be more confident A rational and clear way.

The fuller the ears of rice are, the more they will droop;

The more accomplished a person is, the more modest one must be.
