by Little_Pearls Play_School Play School
Children naturally love music! Whether it’s soft and soothing or a lively tune, children feel it both physically and emotionally. Throughout the early years, children are learning to do new things with their bodies.

Young children are also learning that movement can communicate messages and represent actions. Singing or chanting can help make routine activities and transitions, such as gathering children into a circle or group activity, smoother and more enjoyable.  And music helps to set a mood.  Quiet, soothing music calms and relaxes children, while a lively marching tune rouses them for energetic clean‐up time.Music and movement are also social activities that help children feel part of the group.

At  a combined music and movement approach allows children to have fun together while supporting them to develop confidence as they learn new skills. At Little Pearls several different types of music and movement activities are incorporated in the curriculum.

Teaching songs, such as the “ABCs” or “If You’re Happy and You Know It” while clapping or tapping along can teach rhythm and cadence while learning new words. Songs that involve action and hand gestures that follow the music teach children not only the meaning of some new words, but also to move and sing at the same time.Other types of activities in the classroom include dancing with streamers or scarves, playing small musical instruments, singing songs in rounds, singing while cleaning up, marching to the beat or imitating animals.

Not only can this be beneficial academically, it also keeps children moving, which is good for their little bodies. At Little Pearls music is one of powerful tool that helps preschoolers learn new thinking skills. When children play with musical instruments, they explore cause and effect. They can see that pressing a key makes a sound.

Additionally, they learn to pay attention to changes in sound, noting for example that certain keys sound deeper than others. Exploring musical instruments also helps children learn how different instruments work and the sounds they create. Inviting guest musicians to the child care program is an effective way of introducing children to unfamiliar musical instruments.

Songs with motions help children practice fine-motor coordination. Doing the finger motions of a song like "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" or a finger play like "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed" helps children practice their hand and finger control -- a skill necessary for writing and handling small objects. Dancing to music also helps children perfect their control of their arms and legs. Music and dance are fun and help children be playful with each other and with their child care providers.Music is an important part of Little Pearls curriculum because it creates a wide range of benefits to children.
