Moving House Checklist (Should You Hire a Removalist?)

by Abhinav G. Movie Enthusiast

Many people find moving houses to be a big and exciting event. Let's be honest - we would all like to skip the paperwork, packing, and moving and get to the actual move. It's a lot to do, but there is so little time.

We have created a moving checklist that you can customize and use to save time.

Moving House Checklist

Four weeks before moving:

- Booking a removalist is easy.

This is the best option if you are busy and cannot pack yourself. Invite the removalists to come to your home to estimate the number of boxes and materials you will need for the move. Be sure to obtain a written confirmation detailing all details and costs. To avoid any last-minute problems and ensure a stress-free moving experience, it is important to communicate with moving companies.

- Start packing if you're DIY:

Sort your things and identify the ones you're getting rid of. Sort your items and decide which ones you want to get rid of. Place them in a separate box until you decide how to dispose of them. You can either donate it, sell it online, have a garage or yard sale, and/or dispose of it. Prioritize your most important documents and valuable items to avoid losing them and blaming your utility company, removal company, or professional removalists in brisbane southside.

- It is easy to say that hiring a moving company or utility service will be more expensive, but when you thoroughly research every detail to guide you in your decision-making process, you'll find it easy to choose the best option. You should not only consider the cost but also factors such as safety and stress.

Hire a removalist

Make a list of all large items, such as furniture, appliances, and other possessions. When deciding whether to hire movers or DIY, keep this list in mind.

Do enough research to narrow down your list. Visit the Australian Furniture Removers Association to find a list of accredited removalists in your area.

- Also, you can ask your friends and family for recommendations.

- Compile these and select 3-4 removalists. Contact them to receive a quote. Do not forget to include your pre-made list of items. Removalists may ask you for specifics so that they can provide an accurate estimate.

  • Mention unusual doorways, steep staircases, and any other tasks or paths that will take a lot of time, especially if you are vacating a house. If you are paying your workers on an hourly rate, this is crucial.
  • Some companies offer a no-obligation, free house visit to assess the property and provide a quote.
  1. Ensure you are covered by insurance. The AFRA-accredited removalists can arrange Customer Goods in Transit and Storage Insurance on your behalf. Call your insurance provider to check your policy to see if contents insurance is included.
  2. Check out the additional services that they offer. Some companies offer packing materials, moving boxes, and other services. Some companies may offer their trucks free of charge. Ask them what additional costs there will be.
  • It is helpful to show them your inventory list if they charge by the box or carton.

Do-It-Yourself

1. Check your appliances, furniture, and other heavy items. Some of these items are foldable, or can they be easily disassembled? Compare their weight and size with your own. Will you be able to move them yourself, or will someone else, like a relative, help you?
2. You may have boxes that you can use for moving and storing your items.
  • Bulk orders can save you money if you are looking to buy boxes.
3. You should consider the type of vehicle that you will be using, the petrol cost and the distance you intend to travel, as well as the duration.
  • Always check whether the trailer is able to be towed with your vehicle. Hire furniture trailers begin at $70 per day. Plan the number of rounds you will make to and from each house.
  • Don't forget to verify that your driver's license allows you to operate the truck you are renting. A small moving van will cost you at least $85 per day.
4. Consider your constraints. You only have a single day off work. It might be best to move on a weekend so that you can have a whole weekend. With so many things to do, having less time can be stressful.

- If you are unable to clean your carpet yourself, hire a professional cleaning service. Some landlords will require that you have your carpets professionally cleaned and may even request a bill. The cost will vary depending on the size and number of bedrooms. List your furniture and appliances. Itemize your items by room or box to make sure you don't miss anything.

* Now is the time to make a list of the things you will need for your new house.

* Separate your valuables and place them in a box you will be moving yourself.

- Notify your agent/landlord that you are moving. Most places require at least 28-day notice.

Three Weeks Before Moving:

- All important documents should be gathered in one binder or envelope to make it easier for you to access them on the day of your move.

- You can change your address manually, or you can arrange a redirection via Australia Post.

* Bank

* Superannuation

* Medicare

* Insurance

* Memberships

* Register your car

* The Australian Tax Office

* Children's school(s)

- Transfer utilities to your new home. If necessary, only cancel.

- If you're buying a new house, your solicitor/conveyancer should handle your water connection transfer.

- Start by using up perishable items in your fridge and pantry.

Two Weeks Before Moving:

- You can arrange childcare for your children on the day of moving.

- Organize pet care services for your pets.

- Plan a day of leave for the day you move.

- Confirm the cleaning services and/or removalists.

- When you move, contact utilities to ensure that all your utilities are connected.

- You'll also need to apply for any permits that you will require at your new home. (e.g., parking permit)

- If you want to keep items you don't want to throw away but you also don't want to take to your new home, contact a storage facility.

- You can also collect any items that are still usable and give them to them. Also, you can collect any usable items and give them to the new owner.

One Week Before Moving:

- Continue packing. Prepare your packing materials for the move.

- Remove all food from the fridge or pantry. Only leave food that you will consume within the next week.

- Get rid of all flammables, chemicals, and other substances in your home.

- You'll want to prepare for your first night at your new house by putting aside the things you will need.

* Prepare an important box, or boxes with the things you will need for your first night. It will help you to settle in without opening all the boxes at once. You will probably need a coffee maker, a kettle, cereals, and sleepwear. Also, you may require chargers, prescription medicines, toiletries, and other items.

* You can also order any new items you will need for the first week to be delivered to your new home. Consider the delivery time. For example, a new mattress-in-a-box can be delivered anywhere from four hours to five days depending on your location. * You may also want to consider a new bed for your new home.

One Day Before Moving:

- Do a final clean of the refrigerator and defrost it.

- Confirm the next day's appointments - for child- and pet-care, removalists, cleaners, etc.

- Prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner for the moving day.

Moving Day:

- Make a list of everything you need to do and make a walk-through. Check each room, if nothing is left.

- Give the removalist a floorplan to guide them in where you want your boxes and appliances.

- Collect all keys and make sure that you have read the meters.

- Lock the house, and leave spare keys. If you lose any keys, contact a locksmith so the new owner is not inconvenienced.

- You can leave a note with the new address just in case. Mail and subscriptions may arrive at your former home. Make sure you have updated all billings.

- Keep track of the items on the inventory list before the removalists depart.

- Check that all utilities are functioning.

- Prioritise the important items first. This includes food for the refrigerator, beds, and important appliances. Remember the valuables container that you put aside? For now, you can survive on it.
