MindFinity Stresses Importance Of Significant Changes In “Rethinking” Of Education Before Classes Start Again

As states start to spend their federal grants on “Rethinking Education,” the focus will likely be on improving technology instead of actually improving the curriculum.

Betsy DeVos, the US Secretary of Education, announced last week that she was awarded over $180 million in microgrants to 11 states to rethink their education models. These states, including Georgia, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, North Carolina, New York, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Texas, received funds between $6 million (South Dakota) and $20 million (Tennessee) to create newer, more innovative ways for students to learn. This comes amidst the COVID-19 pandemic when schools are debating whether or not to return as normal for the fall.


“I don’t think schools are going to go far enough to really create environments that benefit these kids,” XXX XXXX at MindFinity says. “We need a complete overhaul of the education system to really benefit children. In order to remain competitive on a global scale, and even within our own country, children need to learn how to think creatively and critically. These changes likely won’t address both of those. Instead, they will be teaching rote memorization.”


Each state will determine what to do with those funds within the guidelines provided by the federal government. Some states will put that money into virtual courses, others will provide professional support to teachers. Much of this grant money will go toward technology and related services, including helping families afford the internet so that students can attend online schooling, if necessary. It is likely that the federal government, as well as state governments, will need to provide schools with even more funding throughout the fall and spring.


“What we need to spend our time and money on is research into what our children actually need from education,” XXXXX continues. “The same old curriculum isn’t going to work anymore. The jobs that benefited from old school learning don’t exist anymore. We need to completely shift curriculums so that our children are prepared.”
