Meet the legends - Top Engineers of All Time

by Nidhi Gupta Career Counsellor
Engineering is what we call when we put our imaginative art and bring it into something part and parcel in our lives. Engineering is what we call when we use the best of our abilities to transform our ideas and give life unto it. Engineering our way through tough times was always a human way. Perhaps most youngsters these days are heavily inspired by Tony Stark from Marvel Comics; it is not at all a bad idea to look at some of the heroes of reality. With about 9.65 Lakh applicants for the JEE Main 2019, we present to you some of the most renowned Engineers of all time. Be inspired with the stories of these legends because we hope to see the best of your abilities put into some revolutionizing work.

So let’s get to the exciting stuff. The men of the moment; the legends; the top engineering minds of all time; here we go.

  • Leonardo Da Vinci - Who else better than Leonardo da Vinci to begin with. He was an all-rounder, and gave great many contributions in areas like inventions, sculpting, architecture, science, mathematics, engineering, and many more. Leonardo Da Vinci was involved in some of the greatest engineering marvels such as flying machines, movable barricades and fortitudes, mechanical knights, hydraulic pumps, reversible crank mechanisms, finned mortar shells, and steam cannon. Leonardo’s paintings gave rise many structures today including a bridge in Norway that was built based on Da Vinci’s drawing.

  • Isambard Kingdom Brunel - Brunel was an English Civil and Mechanical Engineer who was called as ‘one of the most ingenious and prolific figures in engineering history’ by the Design Museum. He was involved with various groundbreaking projects and served as a long term wedge for various problems in engineering. Some of his creations include dockyards, the great western railway, series of steamships, transatlantic steamship, and many bridges and tunnels. His creations are relevant to this day.

  • Archimedes - This is one name everyone would relate to. His engineering concepts may or may not be useful, but his ‘Eureka’ phrase is still very much in use. Well that’s not true. Being one of the greatest classical engineers, Archimedes has created very many devices that influenced in much of the concepts in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, and Astronomy. Archimedes is particularly known for his Archimedes Screw, Hydrostatics, Levels, Solar Heat Ray systems to prevent attacks from enemy ships, infinitesimals, constructions, and many more.

  • George Stephenson - Born in England, Stephenson was a civil and mechanical engineer. His achievements are appraised by many, and in fact, Stephenson was renowned as the ‘father of railways’. Railways were a key component of the Industrial Revolution as it eased the ways to transportation of goods much more efficiently. Stephenson along with his son built a steam locomotive that could carry passengers for the first time. Furthermore, Stephenson was experimenting with safety lamps that could burn the gas without exploding.

  • Gustav Eiffel - Perhaps this name makes a bit of sense to you already. He is the man behind the Eiffel Tower located in France. Other than that, Eiffel was involved in the constructions of various bridges for railway network. Eiffel also has significant contribution in the making of "Statue of Liberty".

  • Elon Musk - South African born Canadian and US citizen, Elon Musk is one name is list can’t go without. Elon Musk is the founder of big names such as Space X, Tesla Inc., Solar City, Neuralink, and many more. One of the most powerful men in the world, Musk has designed and built very many engineering marvels.

  • E Sreedharan - The one man who changed the face of Indian Transportation single handedly. E Sreedharan is a civil engineer and a retired IES officer and popularly known by the name of ‘metro man’. E Sreedharan gave a massive contribution in building the Konkan Railway and Delhi Metro. He was awards and achievements in his name such as Padma Shri (2001), Padma Vibhushan (2008), Chevalier de la Legion d’honneur (2005), and named as one of Asia’s Heroes in TIME Magazine.

This list is just a tiny few of the very many names that have changed the face of earth by their enormous contributions. Perhaps nature itself is the best creator of marvels, and we have masses of exemplars such as the Mount Everest, the Great Barrier Reef, Victoria Falls, Amazon Rainforest, the Andes, or the insides of our evolutionarily well-structured bodies, and many more. It is obvious that humans could never reach that standard of infinitely marvelous creations. However, we can indeed make our own species go in awe and splendor; and we are talking about the man-made marvels such as Millau Viaduct cable-stayed road bridge, the Venice Tide Barrier project, National Stadium aka bird’s nest in China, Palm islands in Dubai, The large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Chandra X-ray Observatory, and many more.
