Mauritius - diving in the Indian Ocean

by Michael Brown Writer
A holiday in Mauritius present travellers with a great opportunity to venture below the waves of the Indian Ocean with scuba diving tours or certified scuba courses. There are many dive spots to choose from and these include unique dives to the Rose Garden with its rare pink coral formations and Corsair’s Wall with its rare black coral.

All of the sites however aren’t accessible to everyone with varied depths and experience required. Having said this, there are plenty of opportunities for all with most of the best sites ranging from a depth of 7 metres down to 60 metres. Here we will reference the best scuba spots starting with the deep and shallow out our possible experiences for those not so seasoned or for those who have been out of the water for some time.

60 metres – King Fish Kingdom – Possibly the best dive spot in Mauritius with a decent to the wall and towards a tunnel that has an opened roof fault and cliffs.

38 metres – White Rock – Offers the chance to view multiple species of marine life with the possibility of being visited by swordfish and hammerheads.

31 metres – Lost Anchor – Here a 17th century anchor sits within a small patch of hard & soft coral that is visited by scorpion fish, peacock groupers, crayfish, totan triggerfish and porcupine fish.

26 metres – The Stella Maru Wreck – A Japanese fishing trawler that was sunk in the late 80’s and is now home to two giant moray eels that can be photographed or captured on film.

26 metres – The Emily and Water Lilly Wrecks – There are two barges that were sank to create an artificial reef and lie within metres of each other providing a home to eels as well as tasselled and raggy scorpion fish.

25 metres – Holt’s Rock – This is a great dive for underwater photography and the large blocks of coral are visited by lobster, scorpion fish, stone fish, butterfly fish, trigger fish, clown fish and angel fish.

19 metres – Coral Garden – This is a rewarding dive with a colourful garden of coral visited by yellow tail fish, surgeons, angel fish and butterfly fish.

18 metres – Anchor Reef – This site is a mix of coral divided by sandy gullies and the extensive size of the site is great for exploring on a longer dive. Photographers should look out for large schools of bat fish!

7 metres – Corsair Reef – This is a great dive for the beginner due to its shallow depth and still holds much to astound with plenty of marine life and colourful species of tropical fish.

A Mauritius holiday or Mauritius honeymoon is a perfect choice for scuba fans and if you haven’t dived before then this could be the chance to begin a passion that will last a lifetime.
