Maths is Fun with Make Math Moments

Maths if fun for some, but it is scary for most people. This is not the case; it all depends on your perception and willpower to solve a particular problem. We often hesitate to do maths and consider it as a different subject. Instead, if we try relating it with other subjects and take it easy, there will be no issue at all.  

Make Math Moments is developed just for people who have a fear of maths and often fail to understand its concepts. Let’s first analyze what are the underlying problems which occur due to traditional teaching ways. 

Our team conducted a survey with some students. Some kinds of problems were being solved by the teacher and a direct method through instructions was being followed. What our team members found that half of the students just pretended rather than mimicked to solve the problem. Another behavior that was noticed was, students were trying to fool the teacher and they were not actually solving any problem. Only a few students were actually found to understand the concept and reasoning. 

On a whole, we came to a conclusion that for years we have been teaching traditionally and students did nothing but relied on teachers to do all the critical thinking processes for them. After several years of struggle and refining all the problems our team finally found the correct way to make a lesson plan, which would ensure the following:

• A particular interest of the student
• Problem-solving ability improved with productive struggle
• Students started to make sense of what they were being taught

The initial change has to be required on the teacher’s end. Nothing is tough, if the correct methodology is used and the problems of the students are addressed at the right time we can easily make them understand the concepts. 

We have created a 3 step dynamic framework that is interconnected to each other:

• Sparking curiosity
• Igniting teachers skills/methodology/moves
• Fuelling sense-making

If the above 3 steps are followed properly and in a practical manner then we can gain surety about the following things:

• The emergence of new mathematical concepts, models, etc which are directed through experiential learning
• Engaging students in problems that involve productive struggle
• Proper questioning and answer is facilitated
