Little Changes Make a Big Difference

by Pinky Tyagi Blogger & Writter

If you're like most homeowners, your desire to upgrade your rooms outpaces your budget. While you're saving for a major renovation, you can achieve temporary satisfaction by taking care of the little things. Walk into the room in your house that bothers you most and take a look at the walls. How many wall plates are there in the room, both outlet plates and switch plates? Are they builder-grade plastic? Replacing them with high quality plates will provide an instant upgrade to the room, and will help you see improvement while you save for the big fix. Here's how to go about finding new wall plates:

What Steps to Take

  • Start by perusing home improvement magazines and pay attention to the type of wall plates adorn the different rooms. Browse the internet and narrow down the types of plates you like.
  • You want to pick plates that aren't strictly utilitarian, but you also don't want to make them a focal point of the room, either. Narrow your selection to plates that will blend in with the rest of the room and not detract from it.
  • Don't get overwhelmed by the wide selection of styles, finishes and configurations. Take it a step at a time, starting with the type of material you want. Popular choices are nickel, bronze, brass, copper, chrome, wood, ceramic, and stone.
  • Decide if you want a plate that has an industrial look or old world decor or something in between. This can be determined by the type of finish you decide on–brushed, aged, or satin. A brushed finish will offer a contemporary look, while an aged finish is a more sophisticated plate, and satin is more transitional.
  • Then, you need to decide if you prefer cast metal or stamped steel. Stamped steel edging can produce an antique look, especially if the finish is oil rubbed. Cast metal provides a more modern, sleek, design.
  • Once you've settled on a design, you need to take inventory of the room and determine how many electrical wall plates you need and how many switch plates, and the configuration of each. Are the wall plates all two-outlet plate patterns? For switch plates, how many switches are in one location? Do you want toggle switches or rocker ones?
  • Finally, make sure you order dimmer switches, and child proof covers.

When your order arrives, you'll need a screwdriver and about an hour of your time to instantly add elegance and sophistication to your room with your new wall plates
