by Rita Martin Marketing Manager

It is considered that the only products out of our thoughts are the feelings and emotions of an individual. The cognitive behavioral therapy for kids is meant to help them in identifying these thoughts and altering the helpful ones through intervening by talking, changing behavioral patterns and thinking. This therapy focuses on the emotions as well as thoughts of the children leading to certain behaviors. This therapy is meant for making improvement in the anxiety, behavior and moods of a child on examining the problems of distorted or confused patterns of thinking.

It has often been seen that a number of therapists practice a type of psychotherapy focusing on both behavior as well as thoughts. This treatment is known as the CBT or the cognitive behavioral therapy. These therapists make the children learn that the thoughts cause feelings as well as moods influencing the behavior of a child. This therapy is performed by numerous mental health professionals, including counselors as well as social workers. The candidates, who are interested in pursuing CBT, are required to possess master’s degree in any related field.

There are several methods of CBT that are used for treatment of different medical conditions, including:

  • Positive self statements

  • Modeling, role playing and reinforcement using CBT skills

  • Guiding self statements

  • Relaxation training

  • Verbal self instructions

This psychotherapy has proven very beneficial for the individuals including adolescents and the kids. It is believed that some of its benefits are similar to that of behavior therapy:

  • Setting goals, in order to replace negative patterns of behavior with positive ones

  • Increase in self esteem

  • Improved performance at school, in social situations or at home

  • Participating positively in a diverse set of activities

  • Understanding the ways feelings affect the actions as well as thoughts

  • Resolving conflicts with others

  • Appropriately dealing with stress and frustration

  • New ways of learning and self-help techniques are reinforced

  • Receiving emotional support and many more.

But, this therapy also has a drawback that is; it depends upon the willingness of the children, so as to learn new skills and practicing them, so as to be effective. This therapy has proven very effective, when used alone, i.e. without practicing it with any medication. This is a daunting task to perform this therapy in the normal regular routine or in the context of a larger therapy program. This can be a barrier in the treatment, if it is being used with a child, who is not interested in getting his/her problem resolved. This therapy requires the use of new skills as well as positive outcomes, in order to encourage a child for practice. This is sure to bring about a lot of change in a child’s life.

Summary:

The CBT or the cognitive behavior theory for kids or adolescents is meant for making them learn that their thoughts have impact on their moods, emotions as well as feelings. This is a psychotherapy performed by a team of mental professionals.
