Leadership Development: Need & Gaps

by Tatva Leadership Leadership Development

As the speed of business increases, organisations often make the mistake of focussing only on the immediate & tactical needs, often at the cost of neglecting long range needs like engagement / inclusion / people development. While in the short term this does not show reflect on targets & profitability it has the potential for seeding major challenges in the future. It is critical for organisations to balance the need for short & long term needs, and often leaders with who exhibit cutting edge Leadership skills are able to do this effortlessly.

Does this happen because companies do not invest in Leadership development, interestingly that is not true, the money spent on leadership development is humongous. The difficulty is that this investment does not result in proportionate profitability.

In our opinion while there are many reasons why leadership development programmes do not deliver the desired results, we are listing two:

·        Very often Leadership development initiatives are generic and not contextualised to culture, structure, vision of the company. When programmes are designed contextually then the focus is on a small number of specific needed capabilities versus a laundry list of competencies being addressed in a generic manner

·        Well-designed leadership development programmes ensure that participants have an opportunity to apply their learning’s on real work related projects. It is only when participants are able to do that does learning move from knowing to doing, with the chances of sustainability & retention higher.

At Tatvã leadership our approach is to ensure maximum contextualizing supported with robust action learning projects.
