Lawn Mowing – Dos and Don’ts You Need to Know

by Sam Smith Digital Marketing Manager
Gone are the days when people relied on scythes or sheep to trim their grass. The advent of electric mowers has made lawn mowing easier than ever. To mow your grass efficiently, you need to apply the right tools/techniques and avoid certain things. This blog post outlines some dos and don’ts to keep in mind when mowing your grass.

Dos and Don’ts of Lawn Mowing

Mowing is not as easy as you may think. It needs to be done correctly to improve the health of your lawn health, whether it be at your home or office.

Dos

Use sharp mower blades: Before mowing your lawn, sharpen your mower’s blades. Dull blades tear grass, leaving it looking messy and frayed. Furthermore, shredded and torn grass cut by blunt blades is prone to disease. Keeping your mower blades sharp sustains a healthy lawn.

Mow dry grass: It is best to mow your grass only when it is dry. Mowing wet grass results in an uneven cut as it usually clogs the mower deck which affects lawn health. Moreover, if someone walks all over wet grass, your lawn gets untidy.

Alter mower height all year: You need to keep adjusting mower height throughout the season. If it is a dry and hot summer, leave your lawn grass longer. This will combat weed growth and help you to overcome heat stress. Taller grass also results in longer roots which slow down soil water evaporation. If you live in a dry climate, your lawn grass can bear drought all year.

Practice grass cycling: When you mow your lawn, leave grass clippings exactly where they fall instead of bagging them. This is known as grass cycling and provides your grass with the nutrients it requires for decomposition. Cut one third of your grass blade each time to get the best results in grass cycling.

Don’ts

Cut lawn very short: Cutting your lawn too short leaves it vulnerable to weeds and disease. Very short grass is highly affected in dry and hot climatic areas where droughts occur frequently. Do not cut more than one third of your grass length so that it does not get too short.

Mow lawn weekly: When you mow your grass weekly, you may end up ignoring essential requirements for a healthy lawn such as water and sunlight. Your grass’s growth rate is affected by the condition of your soil and the time of year. The kind of grass on your lawn helps you decide the frequency of mowing. Generally, mowing once every two weeks is sufficient.

Mow at peak hours of the day: When you mow your lawn during peak hours (10 am to 2 pm), the grass will lose water and will not recover quickly as the sun is strongest during these times. Instead, mow your lawn early in the morning or in the evenings so grass does not suffer from water loss. Additionally, do not mow immediately after seeding your lawn.

Mowing your grass contributes significantly to the overall look and upkeep of your lawn. Hopefully, the above-mentioned tips will help you mow your lawn perfectly and maintain healthy, clean and green grass throughout the season. Do not be shy about hiring a professional lawn care service if you need help. The experts can help you to keep your lawn beautiful forever.
