Lawn and Order: Care Tips

by Kevin Smith Author

One of the many ways to help the environment is by having a healthy lawn. It keeps the area cool, cleans the air you breathe by trapping carbon dioxide, and reduces erosion by improving soil consistency. But, how can you keep it vibrant and green? Here are some easy tips for lawn care in Atlanta:

Drainage System Enhancement

Poor drainage can damage your grass. It prevents oxygen from entering the roots, killing them and creating the perfect environment for fungi. Muddy puddles are another consequence.

One solution is to create an underground drainage system. This can be a ditch filled with gravel or a well full of compacted soil. You can also make berms or mounded hills of dirt to divert water. If you want something more visually pleasing, create a pond that collects rainfall.

Eradicating Pesky Growth

Unwanted moss and weeds deprive grass roots of all the nutrients they need to thrive.

·         Weeds: These are "plants in the wrong place," and it's the most common problem in lawns, parks, and farm fields. To control them, pull them out by hand, including the roots. If there are too many, you can use a low toxin herbicide.

·         Moss: This grows in areas with excessive moisture or dehydrated soil. To control it, you have to improve your drainage system, use fertilizers, or apply a moss control treatment.

Mowing

The best time to mow your lawn is during the summer when the grass grows quicker, unlike in cold seasons. It should be done when everything's dry because cutting a wet lawn can clog your equipment. It can also form clusters that result in an uneven cut. If it's impossible to skip the chore, use a silicone spray so you can keep it from sticking to the machine.

Alternatively, you shouldn’t mow when the sun’s beating down on the grass either. If you must cut when the sun’s up, wait until the cooler part of the day or there's enough shade. Your lawn can lose a tremendous amount of water and recover slowly if you don’t wait. In extreme cases, you’ll end up with big, brown patches where green used to be.

These are just 3 of the many ways to take care of your grass. Start practicing proper lawn care in Atlanta to maintain greener turf and help the environment.
