Know The Types Of Heart Disease

by Giselle Lobo Writer & Blogger

The heart is the vital organ that controls the blood flow throughout our body. Any threat to it results in severe complications like permanent disability or even death. Hence, it is crucial to make sure you keep it in a healthy working condition. Although heart disease is the leading cause of death in men and women, it is preventable for most people. Adopting a healthy diet and lifestyle habits helps in enhancing heart health and controlling adverse effects.

Contrary to popular belief, heart disease is not limited to an older age. Owing to the stressful lifestyle and unhealthy food habits among all age groups, it can tackle anyone. Therefore, it is better to adopt preventive practices by learning about its different types. The most common type is coronary artery disease. It pertains to blockage of arteries affecting the blood flow. Here are some other conditions and symptoms related to the same:

Arrhythmia

It refers to an irregular heartbeat. This happens when the electrical impulses that are coordinating the heartbeat work improperly. The condition causes your heart to beat too quickly, slowly, or erratically. The ailment usually starts as a fluttering feeling in your chest. Some other symptoms following this feeling are slow pulse, fainting spells, dizziness, chest pain, light-headedness, etc.

The condition generally develops from other heart problems but may also occur on its own. Let your doctor know immediately for an accurate examination.

Heart valve disease

The heart has four valves that work in unison to pump the blood in the proper direction. An abnormality in any of the valves affects the regular functioning of the heart. It makes the opening and closing of the valves difficult. When that happens, regurgitation or leakage occurs. Some causes include stenosis, thickening of valve flaps, high blood pressure, rheumatic fever, etc. If your aortic valve gets affected, doctors recommend bypass surgery to tackle the blockage.

Heart failure

It is when your heart is still working but not in its total capacity. The main impact is on the pumping and relaxation function, which affects the blood flow. It is not a disorder on its own but an effect of untreated symptoms that weaken the heart muscle. Common conditions causing heart failure are abnormal heart valves, cardiovascular disease, heart muscle defect, etc. Hence, do not ignore such abnormal symptoms and get them diagnosed on time.

Atrial septal defect

Some ailments are not the result of your lifestyle choices. They are something you are born with. Atrial septal defect, commonly known as congenital heart disease, is one of them. It develops with birth a small hole in the heart or something severe and is often not diagnosed until symptoms surface in adulthood. The typical signs include blue-tinged skin, shortness of breath, irregular heart rhythm, etc.

Dilated cardiomyopathy

In this disorder, the heart chambers become dilated, which causes the heart muscles to stretch and become thinner. As a result, the heart becomes frail and does not pump blood properly. The most common causes include past heart attacks, toxins, arrhythmias, and even genetics in some cases.
