Scholarships are a great means of encouraging students to pursue higher education. They also play a crucial role in providing meritorious students, coming from financially weaker sections, an opportunity to fulfill their potential and access quality education. The various scholarships provided to socially sidelined groups are also helping increase the proportion of these students in institutions of higher education. Various schemes under the ambit of central as well as the state government are launched each year. One such scholarship for SC students was launched by the central government. The scholarship, Top Class Education Scheme for SC Students 2017-18 was launched by the central government to recognise and promote education amongst students belonging to the SC category. It provided financial support to help students pursue education beyond class 12.

This scholarship scheme was framed in pursuance of the Union Budget 2005-06 and subsequently revised in 2012. This scheme has been promoting quality education among students of the SC community. According to the government data, this program covers 175 notified institutions of excellence spread all over the country including IITs, IIMs, NITs and reputed medical/law institutions of excellence. Each year, a total of 1250 scholarships are granted for engineering, medical/dentistry, law, management and other specialised schemes. Moreover, this scholarship for SC students covers the entire duration of the course.

Eligibility :- The students applying for this scholarship should belong to SC category and must have secured admission in a notified institution. Since the scholarship program is only for students of financially weaker sections, the annual family income of the applicant must be less than INR 4.5 lakh. In most cases, the scholarship will be awarded to only first-year students. The courses eligible for this scholarship are BTech, MBBS, MBA, MD, MS, LLB and LLM.

Application Procedure :- The application is an online procedure and the applicant needs to register on the official website before proceeding with filling the form. After completing the registration, the user needs to fill in all the respective details and then submit the final application.

Scholarship Benefits :- Under this scheme, full tuition fee and other non-refundable charges are covered. But there is a ceiling of INR 2 lakh per annum per student and INR 3.72 lakh per annum depending on the type of the institute. Living expenses (INR 2220 per month per student) and books and stationery (INR 3000 per annum per student) are also covered. Moreover, a latest computer with full accessories is also given to the selected students.
