Job Solutions For The Data Science Consultants

by Swetha So Analyst

Many companies complain about the scarcity of data analytics consulting talent, while most of the professionals complain about the lack of available jobs. It seems like everyone wants to work for some hot start-up or big companies like LinkedIn, Facebook, Google, Intel, Twitter or Apple.

Even for getting a job interview the professionals have to fight the tough competition. And the companies which do not belong to this circle will have very few candidates applying for data science tools positions. Further to this, the companies hire only technical developers.

The companies don’t hire the real data scientists for the data science consulting, that is why many data scientists looking for work wouldn’t apply as they won’t be perceived as the bringing value to the organization.

The problem for consulting is different in nature. The companies are looking for the consultant who is the cheapest having the minimum qualification of the platform to perform the task. As the work will be performed from him the candidate will be asked to show some of the previous projects. Just to land a gig the consultants compete with many people all over the world.

So what are the solutions, for a consultant?

Here's a list of ideas:

  • Try to work on the new stuff and avoid the stuff which everyone knows such as decision trees, logistic regression, and neural networks because you will be fighting against a number of professionals who can that too.

  • Automate your Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) and analysis as much as you can.

  • Make sure to convince your clients about the quantifiable amount or added value that you can provide and also make sure to measure the value added. Some of the clients wouldn’t mind paying you even $100,000 if you’re being able to generate revenue of another $500,000 for the client even after taking just 50 hours of work.

  • Try to reduce your costs, if you’re working from home then you don’t a car or fuel to travel, you can just use your house as office space. You can use the open source tools, and get educated through online platforms and books which will save your money from expensive training. If you have a social presence then you don’t need a marketing budget. The marketing will eat up almost 50% of your budget, you can save it by having a social presence and by attending events or conferences it can be brought down to zero. Now that you don’t have many expenses you can charge lower and attract more clients.

  • As big data is the cheaper process, try to work on the projects of big data, it can also provide a lot of automation. Though you will need to have the correct expertise, there are many companies that lack the talent to properly identify the correct data and extract value. Charging per project rather than per hour would be a suggestion for such projects.

So we hope that by following these tips you will be finally able to beat the competition and get yourself a couple of clients.
