Jageshwar- Where Mysticism meets Spirituality

Jageshwar is one of the most popular places in Uttarakhand for pilgrims. People visit this place to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva whose temples are scattered all over the town and its vicinity. Oweing to its spiritual significance, Jageshwar has become has become one of the tourist places in Uttarakhand which is frequented by people from different parts of India.

 

Notable tourist destinations in Jageshwar include Mahamritunjaya Temple, Dandeshwar Temple, Mirtola Ashram etc. The Mahamritunjaya Temple is one of the oldest temples of the region. It was built during the Gupta period and is an excellent example of the Nagara style of architecture. Situated in a valley and surrounded by green alpine trees, this temple area witnessed a lot of temple building activity even after the fall of the Gupta dynasty.

 

The Mirtola Ashram is a place of great spiritual significance and natural beauty and has been built around a Shiva Temple with the name of Uttar Vrindavan. The Dandeshwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and was built by the Katyuri kings in between the 9th and 10th centuries. One of the biggest temples of Kumaon region its sanctum has a square shape and the Shikhara (Spire) is also different from other temples in the region.

 

The main festivals of the town include the Shivratri mela usually held in the month of March and the Jageshwar monsoon festival held in the month of August. Like all other Uttarakhand tourist places the best time to visit Jageshwar is in the summer between April to June when the weather is mild.

 

A visit to Jageshwar is considered more sacred by locals in comparison to the Charm Dham Yatra undertaken by pilgrims to visit Gangotri, Yamnotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. The closest railway station is in Kathgodam which is around 125 km away from the town. You can take a cab to reach Kathgodam from Jageshwar in a couple of hours.

 

Kathgodam is well connected with cities like Delhi, Lucknow and Kolkata. Pantnagar is the closest airport to Jageshwar and is 150 km away. In addition buses also ply to Jageshwar from other parts of Uttarakhand on a daily basis. The hotels here are equipped with all sorts of amenities to meet the boarding and lodging facilities of tourists. To have a respite from the mundane, monotonous city life you can go for a trip to Jageshwar and have an experience of a lifetime.
