Italian Grand Prix

by Susan B. Media

This season has been one with many changes. The introduction of the new turbocharged V6 engines as well as the new regulations have given the Formula 1 teams a lot to think about. Mercedes have adapted best to these changes so far this season, leading both the team and individual standings. Hopefully the mid-season break has given the other teams a chance to try and catch Mercedes and provide an exciting battle come the end of the season.

The Italian Grand Prix is the next race up on the F1 calendar and after the last race in Spa, excitement is starting to build up. The summer break has come at a good time for Daniel Ricardo, who after a superb performance in Hungary just before the break won again in Belgium two weeks ago to keep him in the hunt for the title. Will the rest of the pack, led by Ricardo, catch the two Mercedes drivers after the mid-season test period or will Mercedes continue to dominate with their inter-team battle? Hopefully the Italian Grand Prix will give us a good idea. Either way we have an exciting few months ahead of us.

The Italian Grand Prix last year saw Sebastian Vettel claim his 6th victory in a season where he could have been described as untouchable, however the German is trailing this year in 6th, with no hope left of reclaiming his title. However Vettel will still be targeting the Italian Grand Prix, as he has had three previous wins here, and this one would draw him level with the legendary Nelson Pique, and one behind fellow countryman Michael Schumacher, widely considered as one of the best Formula 1 drivers ever, with a record seven world championships.

The Italian Grand Prix has been running since 1921. That race was won by Frenchman, Jules Goux, driving for Ballot in Brescia. The Grand Prix has since been held in eight different locations, but has settled on the Monza road circuit, where it has been held for the last 32 years. In the 84th edition of the race this year, the Italian fans will have no home racer to support, as there are no Italian racers in the field. However, there will be three Frenchmen trying to replicate the achievements of Goux. Although Jean-Éric Vergne, Jules Bianchi and Romain Grosjean are all outsiders to take the win, with this season being much more open than previous ones due to the changing regulations, the opportunity is there.

Considering going to watch the Italian Grand Prix to see this season’s title race unfold before your very eyes? Then it’s not too late to organise your accommodation and transport. Whether you fly by luxury private jet charter, scheduled flight, train or ferry, you will have a great time watching some top drivers perform on this wonderful occasion.
