Is There Any Eco-Friendly Way to Seal Natural Stone?

by Philip Smith Inbound Marketing Manager

One word, but a tricky, answer to that is, yes. There are natural sealants available for natural stone floors, walls, counters, and backsplashes. Though, they will not be completely natural.

Many homeowners ask, why the finish or sealant on natural stone floors is not natural. Apparently, it is the only artificial thing on natural stone.

Water-Based Sealants –

Water-based natural stone sealers are like natural sealer, but they come with artificial oils and glue. If you want your natural stone floor to be completely natural, you can consider removing its existing surface finish, and live with it ensuring proper care and maintenance.

To be specific, these are a type of penetrating sealer, that penetrates into the pores of the stone, and fills and blocks them. The water takes the sealer into the stone, and dries, leaving the sealer behind to protect the stone.

Here are a few tips to use this type of sealant on your natural stone flooring –

  • Before sealant application, the floor surface should be free from dust and dirt. You should clean it thoroughly beforehand.
  • Vacuum and wash the floor with a mild floor cleaner. Remove stains and fix scratches before sealing.
  • Let the floor dry completely. You should use heaters and ventilators for this. You could also consider rubbing the floor with clean dry towel. This will give the stone floor a natural stone, taking all its moisture out.
  • Test a small, hidden area before sealing the entire floor. This will give you an idea if this is the right sealer for your natural stone. If you notice that the sealant is reacting with the stone, you must not use it for your stone flooring.
  • So, the sealant test is successful, and you are now gearing up for sealing your entire flooring.
  • Water-based sealers can be applied with the help of spray machine or paint roller.
  • Apply a layer of sealant, and let it penetrate and dry.
  • Add another layer of sealant, and let it dry too.
