Is There a Cure for ED?

by Shabaz Shaikh Seo expert

There are many different causes of ED: some can be cured, others can’t. But the good news is you can often improve ED symptoms through some sort of treatment.

First there are “reversible” causes of ED. These are causes that can be stopped, such as medications that cause ED as a side effect, cigarettes, drugs, or alcohol. ED can also be caused by being overweight, suffering from stress, or having relationship difficulties. Although these causes are harder to fix, if you can lower your weight, improve your stress, or find ways of working through you relationship difficulties, then your ED is likely to go away.

There are other causes of ED which we’ll call “treatable”. These are conditions that can’t be cured (for example, hormonal imbalances, depression, anxiety, high cholesterol) but they can improve when treated, and with that, the ED they cause often improves, too.

What are the non-curable causes of ED?

These are those causes of ED that cannot be reversed or treated but that can be safely and successfully treated with ED medication. And finally, there are a few causes of ED that cannot be cured and cannot be treated with ED medications. Other treatments like surgery, implants, or injections may be an option in these cases.

The research is pretty good. Studies generally support this.

What is ED and who should care?
Erectile dysfunction is defined as regular difficulty getting or maintaining an erection for satisfying sex. The key word here is “regular.” It’s normal for men to have problems getting hard on occasion, but when successful erections become the exception more than the rule, or when they flat out don’t happen anymore, that’s ED — and that can be a sign there’s something else going on inside.

In some cases, it’s a cause or condition that you can do something about. Removing the cause (if it’s a medication, a drug you take socially, some excess weight, that smoking habit you are trying to kick, or a toxic relationship) could help fix your ED without the need for any treatment. It could be that simple. Treating the cause (if it’s a hormonal problem, or depression or anxiety) requires a little more time and effort, but is well worth it. You could see your ED improve significantly or go away completely as you treat the underlying problem, without the need for ED medications like sildenafil (Viagra) or tadalafil (Cialis).

Sometimes though, ED is caused by a mix of different things. Stopping one cause or treating another may not solve the ED completely if there are other factors at play. In these cases, your physician will want to dig a little deeper to find out what’s going on.

The complete answer
Erectile dysfunction, or ED, is regular difficulty in getting and maintaining enough of an erection for satisfying sexual intercourse.

Getting and maintaining an erection is a complex process involving blood vessels, nerves, muscles, brain messaging, and psychology. With so many steps involved, it’s not surprising that problems can happen along the way. But until it happens to you, you may not realize how common it is. Luckily, not all causes of ED are permanent, and not all of them are serious.

Let’s run through some of the curable causes of ED. By curable/cured, we mean causes of ED which, when avoided or treated, improve ED for good without the need for ED medication, surgery, injections, or implants.

Curable causes of ED
Medication side effects
Medications that can cause ED as a side effect represent at least 25% of all cases of ED. The biggest offenders are a type of high blood pressure medications called diuretics, some antidepressants (especially SSRIs and SNRIs), some drugs for indigestion, some antihistamines, and some opioid painkillers. Parkinson’s medications, some chemotherapies, and some prostate cancer treatments can also cause ED, but to a lesser degree.

If you think your medication might be causing ED, talk to the doctor who prescribed it to you. They might recommend that you lower your dose, stop taking it, or switch to another medication with a lower risk for ED.

Recreational drugs and nicotine
You might think that using alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, methadone, amphetamines, or barbiturates can help with sexual confidence and arousal, but the truth is quite the opposite: all of these substances can actually make it much more difficult to get and maintain a satisfying erection. So, skip the drugs. They will only lead to disappointment.

Likewise, nicotine (both smoked and vaped) can affect your ability to get hard, and can also make it more difficult to become sexually aroused in the first place.

If you are experiencing sexual dysfunction, take a look at your social habits: do you smoke, drink alcohol, use marijuana or other substances recreationally? If so, there is a pretty high chance that these could be causing your erectile problems.

Obesity
Obesity and excess fat around your waist can cause erectile dysfunction by increasing your risk for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, all of which are causes of ED. Did you know that obesity also lowers your testosterone levels? Low testosterone levels affect your sex drive and ability to maintain an erection too. More about that next.

If you are obese, losing weight through healthier eating and regular exercise has many benefits to your mental and physical health, not least, improving erectile dysfunction.
