Is it safe to visit Gulmarg in January?

Gulmarg, the meadow of flowers, is a jewel in the Kashmiri pearls. The landscape is famous for its scenic lush fields in summer and its vast snow-covered grounds in winter. The region is a popular touristic destination all year round. However, Gulmarg is earning a high prestige for its unparalleled offerings in winter. 

Though, the question always remains, with its multiple-feet-deep snow and moody winter weather, is it safe to visit the area in winter? Let’s find out. 

Gulmarg in January 

January is the coldest month in Gulmarg. The weather can briefly be described as too cold for any comfort. Day temperatures stick at around 2 degrees below zero and t night, the temperature drops down to as low as -15 degrees. 

Snowfall is frequent and heavy. The weather is misty and visibility is quite low. Sunshine is a rare luxury in Gulmarg in January. People are shut inside doors during snowfall and many roads get blocked, affecting mobility. 

However, does it mean that Gulmarg is not the best place to be visited in January? Quite wrong. Gulmarg is a preferred tourist destination, especially in January due to the following luxuries. 

Skiing in Gulmarg

Gulmarg becomes a skiing hotspot in winter. The snow is so rich and abundant that the steep slopes of Gulmarg become every skier’s dream. Phase 2 of the Gandola ride takes skiers to heights from where they can ski down.

Gulmarg has an added advantage for skiers where experts at skiing are found in the area who can help you prevent going face down in the snow. In no other month is skiing so feasible in Gulmarg as in January.

Snowboarding, snowmobiling, and sledging are all popular activities that have their roots lying in the month of January. The area is filled with enthusiasts of snow activities. It looks like a festival in Gulmarg.

Gandola Ride

The added advantage of the month of January on the Gandola ride is that in summer, you have to go for the Gandola ride phase 2 if you want to see any snow. In winter and especially in January when all the snow has settled deep, you can see deep snow in Phase 1 only. 

So, is it safe to visit Gulmarg in January?

If you are planning to visit Gulmarg in January, you need to take care of some things and you will be perfectly fine.

• Carry a heavy windproof and waterproof jacket with you. Also take care to carry a woolen cap, a scarf, and thick gloves. 

• Your boots should be snowproof and at least shin-length. However, snow boots are also available for renting in Gulmarg. 

• Hotels in Gulmarg are pretty expensive. If you want to avoid paying high, you should stay over in Srinagar and visit Gulmarg for a day only. 

• You will have to change taxis at Tangmarg as it will not be allowed to go further.
