IoT Applications in the Healthcare

by Biz4 Intellia IoT Solutions

The application of the Internet of Things in healthcare is a technology-based health care method. It has recently emerged and has numerous benefits to enhance the quality of treatments to improve a patient’s health.

Why IoT is being implemented in the healthcare sector and what are its perks:

· Firstly, there is real time monitoring system through the connected devices which can save lives in situations such as heart attacks, diabetes etc. This is done by simultaneous reporting of problems faced by the patients. The connected device collects medical and health information of the patient and transfers it to a physician for further analysis.

· Secondly, there is remote medical aid being provided by smart mobile apps. Mobile solutions used in healthcare instantly check patients to identify the illness. These then collaborate with drug delivery firms to distribute drugs to the patient depending on his/her prescription.

· Thirdly, there is a cloud access which stores and manages the large amount of data sent by a healthcare device. The data analytics available in this field speed up the decision-making capacity of the healthcare device so that it is less prone to errors henceforth.

· Lastly, IoT is also used in the research domain in order to bring about the introduction of better medical treatments in a shorter duration of time. The quality of healthcare services being provided to the patients will also increase by simply using embedded chips of smart devices. The embedded chips enhance care given to the patient.

The several domains/sectors in which IoT is currently being used in healthcare:

  • Hospitals - Sensors are installed in medical equipment used in hospitals such as oxygen pumps, wheelchairs, nebulizers to monitor whether there are permissible levels of oxygen in the oxygen tanks, whether the automated wheelchairs are not faulty. There is environmental monitoring done to check whether the medical drugs are being kept in their permittable temperature range. The deep freezing of organs and bodies kept for postmortem are also being monitored by the temperature sensors installed in refrigerators.
  • Health Insurance Companies - Health insurers leverage data captured by their health monitoring systems. This enables them to detect any sort of fraud claims, by bringing transparency between the insurance supplier and receiver. Furthermore, IoT keeps track of the treatment plans taken up by their customers and accordingly provide better treatment plans (if available) and precautionary health measures.
  • Patients & Physicians - The patients use fitness bands or smart devices that measure the pulse rate, blood pressure, calorie count, fitness level reached etc. Physicians have access to the data stored by the fitness bands which helps them to track their patient’s health in a better manner. Immediate medication is provided by the physicians. Data stored from these IoT devices help physicians to track down the best treatment process for the patient by using their own knowledge and by records given by their other patients, in case the same problem was being faced by any of their previous patients.

How is Internet of Things revolutionizing healthcare?

There has been a revolution of data that contributed to allowing people to live healthier lives by wearing fitness bands, using tablets etc. that work on the Internet of Things. It also allows consumers to monitor their own health in an independent manner. Revolution in cloud computing has contributed towards this progress. Data analysis enhances the decision-making power of doctors and transforms the lives of chronically ill people.

Wrap Up:

IoT is producing smart connected solutions which are designed for health improvement via the intelligent usage of data. This is enabling cloud-based tools allowing patients to consult with patients who are out of permissible ranges of meeting in person.
