Every generation since Gen X has put more and more emphasis on collaboration, transparency, and feedback. They care about how employers communicate with and receive information from them and are developing a distaste for office politics.

With these changes in the workforce demographics, companies need to pay more attention to providing the right tools for internal communication. The right communication tool can ensure a successful transition to this new more collaborative work environment and align staff behind a common goal.

Encourage Open Discussions

If you want your employees to be productive, you want to make sure they feel comfortable communicating both with their team members and with the upper management. Most companies claim a culture of honesty and brag about how well they receive staff feedback. However, few are able to walk the walk.

Most staff, especially new hires, can be very reluctant to challenge management. Many fear they’ll have to pay for it, one way or another, further down the line. Often, this fear is based in past negative experiences. Because of this, employees will often do as instructed even when they know a more efficient way.

Showing employees that you value their input is how you build trust. This trust allows you to gain important feedback and keeps them from leaving the company for another that values what they have to say.

Make Sure Everyone Knows the Protocol

Every organization has its own internal rules and procedures that all employees learn over time. This internal protocol can include information on how to ensure confidential information remains confidential, how to present the company in client meetings, how to protect your reputation in the business arena, and so on.

You can help your staff acquire this kind of knowledge more quickly by providing a set of internal documents for their personal reference. You can also discuss this document during the training process to make sure everyone is on the same page.

In addition to specific internal protocol, it’s vital to take the time to explain your company’s values and mission to all staff members. If they’re going to be a part of your team, they need to know the goals you’re trying to reach.

Technology can help keep everyone up to speed with any issues or changes your company experiences. You can use mass text messaging to let your staff know if there are any schedule updates that apply to them. In this way, you can be certain that information doesn’t get distorted in passing through the many steps in the chain of communication.

Plan External Events to Boost the Engagement Rate

Despite their bad reputation, team building activities have been shown to increase collaboration and mitigate conflicts. When done correctly, they can result in more engaged employees. This means a lower turnover rate and a boost in your bottom line.

Team building events allow your employees to get to know each other as they are outside of work. This type of bonding builds trust that transfers into the workplace. With time, you’ll see that the atmosphere becomes friendlier and more collaborative.
