Organ donation is a process by which the organs from the patient is surgically removed and placed into the recipient’s body after the consent of the donor family. The need for organ transplant arises when the organ of the person starts failing or its functioning is affected due to some diseases and will require an organ transplant too survive. There are many genetic and manmade causes because of which the organ of the person is not able to function anymore. There are some facts about organ donation that are central to India:

  • More than 5 lakhs people die every year due to unavailability of organs.
  • Not more than 5000 people are able to get kidney transplant whereas there are more than 1 lakhs people waiting on the transplant list.
  • We have a very low rate of organ donor per million population. The population of our country is a whooping 1.2 billion people whereas the organ donor pmp is just 0.08.
  • Black marketing is also a harsh reality of organ transplant society.

 

To evade all these issues we have to come up with stricter laws that will prevent these things from happening. People need to be made more aware about the whole concept of organ donation so that they can make a careful choice. People who wish to be organ donors need to talk to their family about it and express this concern so that they can make a conscious decision. They need to be made aware and should be able to understand the whole concept so that they know to honor your wishes in the future.

 

The kind of organ donation that takes place in India is deceased organ donation and living organ donation. The deceased organ donation can take place only after the person is declared brain dead and the next of kin have given their consent for organ donation.
