Inside Mount or Outside Mount for my Window Blinds?

by Pathlie Lee Business consultant

Thinking of buying window treatments for your blinds? If so, you need to choose out of the inside or outside mount. In this article, we’ll discuss the two mount styles and how to use them to help you make the buying decision easier for you.

Should You Install Blinds as Inside Mount or Outside Mount?

If your window frame has enough depth for mounting the blinds, it is best to install the inside mount. On the other hand, the outside mount must be installed if the windows are shallow for mounting the inside or if there are any obstructions, such as a window crank.

How window depth is measured?

When choosing either the inside mount or outside mount, the very first thing you must consider is the depth of the window and measurement of the window blinds.  Also, check any obstructions like handles, cranks, alarm sensors and trim or tile that may wrap into the window opening.

What is an Inside Mount?

The inside mount is installed when blinds for windows are installed on the top of the window frame. The window treatment brackets are either screwed into the ceiling for window opening or sides.

Installing an inside mount gives your windows a clean and finished look. This allows the blinds to be flushed with the wall without even covering any decorative moulding.

How to take a measurement of inside mount blinds

If you have decided that an inside mount is perfect for your window, you need to measure the exact size of the window opening from one edge to another. You must subtract the window treatments when taking a measurement of the window opening. This is because the mount must not cover or hinder any function of the window treatments.

What is an Outside Mount?

An outside mount is installed when the blinds are attached on the wall around your window or directly fixed onto the window trim. These blinds are made larger than your window opening for giving complete coverage to the window blinds. This window mount style can also be selected when you don’t have enough window depth for mounting inside and when you want to add more coverage to the window for darkening your room.

How to take a measurement for outside mounts

In order to add complete coverage to the entire window, the outside mount window treatments are made certain inches larger than your window opening on the sides. We would recommend you to add around two inches extra in all sides. However, you must follow the instructions for an outside mount, along with the standard measuring instructions given by your professional window blinds company.

Unlike the inside mount, you have to give the exact dimensions to the manufacturer who is making your blinds or shades with outside mount. No extra deductions are done at the factory.

Depending on the above-mentioned measurement techniques and the types of your blind, you can choose either inside or outside mount for your window blinds.
