Indoor Farming With LED Grow Lights

by Samuel Lacates Freelance Writer
LED grow lights have changed the way farming is done. Grow lights have the ability to reproduce conditions of sunlight inside. This allows farmers and hobbyists to grow inside all year around, as well as supplementing natural light inside semi-permeable green house. There are many types of grow lights, and LED grow lights are a relatively new and inexpensive form of synthetic lights. To fully understand grow lights it is important to have a firm understanding of the light that plants require to survive, the various uses of grow lights and specific benefits of using LED lighting.

All plants require light to survive. The chloroform which is naturally produced in plants absorbs sunlight and through the process of photosynthesis transforms the light into energy and provides the plant with food. Just like other forms of life, the smaller the plant the less energy requirements that plant will have. As the plant grows, and the green surface area of the plant increases, more energy and therefore more sunlight will be required. Also, plants which produce larger fruit will require more energy. Vegetable and fruit plants for, example, require more energy than many flowering plants. Regardless of the volume of sunshine required, plants require dark periods as well. A plant which is exposed to sunlight all day and all night will suffer and not thrive. All of this is important to remember when setting up indoor LED grow lights. The level of lighting depends on the specific plant, and the age of the plant which you are lighting. Similarly your indoor plants will need to have periods of respite from the grow lights.

There are limitless uses to grow lighting. The predominate use for LED grow lights is for food production. Many farmers use grow lights as either their main, or secondary source of lighting for food grown indoors or in green houses. More and more agriculture experts are choosing indoor farming as a more predictable method of food production. Growing food inside prevents unpredictable natural occurrences from having a devastating effect on a yield. Indoor and grow light supported tomatoes are much less susceptible to bugs, drought, and windstorms, all of which can destroy a crop. Indoor growing also promotes organic and non pesticide assisted growth. A major usage for grow lights has been to support hydroponic vegetable production. Hydroponics is the mechanism of growing plants without soil. By setting up a complex network of filters and water supply a larger amount of food can be grown in a small green house than a large field. Because these operations are inside, hydroponic farmers must supplement the lack of natural light by using grow lights.

There are many grow lights available. <a href="

LED growing lights lead to much lower energy bills. Similarly, an LED grow light produces much less heat than its competitors. Less heat allows the plants to rest closer to the bulb which allows more of the growing space to be used for more plant growth. The most important benefit to LED lighting is that it can limit the wavelengths of light it produces to the exact needs of that plant's growing cycle. An LED supported green house has many different colors of light. This is because experts have pinpoint exact wavelengths of light which promote growth for specific plants. It is even possible to have multiple wavelengths at once to encourage simultaneous growth of multiple different parts of a single plant at once.
