by Vanessa Felton About Overactive Badder (OAB) :To leak or not to lOveractive bladder is
a common ailment for many people around the world, but there is hope because
solutions to this problem can be simple for many. An overactive bladder is
defined by a number of symptoms that can be physically burdensome and
emotionally draining, including a strong urge to urinate right away and the
need to urinate more often than usual, with or without leakage. The majority of
people who suffer develop the condition between the ages of 45 and 64 years
old.
Overactive bladder symptoms represent a collection of different indicators that include:
- urinary urgency; failure to be able to postpone the need to
urinate
- frequency of urination; the need to urinate at least eight times
per day
- urge incontinence; leakage of urine when one gets the urge to
urinate
- nocturia; the need to get
up and urinate at least two times per night
These are just some overactive bladder symptoms; They vary depending on the patient and their specific medical history and background. There are several treatment choices for overactive bladder symptoms. Some overactive bladder treatments are as simple as changing some daily habits while others require medicine or a medical device. The following is a list of common overactive bladder treatments:
- Change up your diet and try new foods.
You may notice that
certain foods and drinks cause you to urinate more often. Avoiding caffeinated
drinks like coffee, tea, or cola can help you better control your bladder. Also
make sure you are not drinking too much fluid and limit your drinking after
dinner.
Lose a few pounds.
Extra body weight puts
extra pressure on your bladder. By losing weight, you may be able to relieve
some of that pressure and regain your bladder control.
If you have an overactive bladder, your doctor may prescribe a medicine that can calm bladder muscles and nerves. Medicines for overactive bladder come as pills, liquid, or a patch.
- Try nerve stimulation exercises.
A device can be placed
under your skin to deliver mild electrical pulses to the nerves that control
bladder function. Electrical stimulation of the nerves that control the bladder
can improve symptoms of urgency, frequency, and urge incontinence, as well as
bladder emptying problems, in some people.
- A last resort is to undergo surgical procedures.
Doctors may suggest
surgery to improve bladder control if other treatments have failed. Surgery
only helps certain types of overactive bladder symptoms. Most overactive
bladder problems are caused by the bladder neck dropping toward the vagina.
Surgery to lift the bladder may use aintricate design of strings or a ribbon
like sling to support the bladder neck and urethra. To diagnose overactive
bladder a focused history, including past history of urogenital disorders, in
combination with a physical examination and relevant pelvic examinations should
be performed as there are multiple conditions that can cause or contribute to
symptoms of overactive bladder.
