In victory of Democrat senator visiting India, indian Americans played a important role

by Sara Floyd Hello

The youngest senator in the US named Jon Ossoff, who at the age of 35 announced his visit to India with an economic delegation. On the other hand, attention has been drawn to his state Georgia and its fast growing Indian American community.

In 2020, it was the key presidential battleground state, which also determined the fate of the senate. In fact, Asian American voters of Georgia, of which Indian Americans are the largest subgroup, exercised their voting power to decide the winners for the US senate and the White House.

A Democrat, Senator Ossoff who now represents Georgia in the senate, won the crucial election in 2021 by defeating incumbent Republican Senator David Perdue in the run-off election to secure a majority.

According to estimates, Georgia is home to 238,000 eligible Asian Americans and Pacific Islander voters with over 150,000 being Indian Americans who played a pivotal role in the victory.

India visited between August 30 and September 6, ahead of Senator Ossoff’s, Neil Makhija, executive director of Indian American Impact, an organization that elevates voices of Indian Americans in US politics and government said that the Indian American community was critical to Senator Ossoff’s historic victory.

At Indian American Impact, the senator has not yet indicated his support for key legislative priorities we have lifted up, including a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and co-sponsorship of the South Asian Heart Health Bill, which is stuck in the Senate after passing the US House along with bipartisan support.

To learn more about a constituency that is critical to him in Georgia and nationwide we welcome his desire. The pathway to citizenship for Dreamers will support lots of people stuck for several years on green card queques; who face deportation when they turn at the age of 21.

A majority are Indians, The South Asian heart health bill is the first legislation in America that focuses on the issues related to the South Asian Community. In Georgia we will work to represent the Indian American community where the growing Indian diaspora is a thriving and beloved part of our community.

Moreover, Senator Ossoff said in a press release ahead of his visit to India. In 2020-21, in the run-up to the US presidential election and the senate election, Indian American Impacts $2.5 million investment in motivating Indian American voters provoked a key factor in the Democrat’s success.

Apart from this, in digital ads, mails and grassroots organising the organization invested heavily, in addition to a comprehensive poll of Asian American voters that identified important demographics and preferences.

In the US Senate the rapid transformation of Georgia from a deeply red state to one now represented by an all-Democrat delegation. It is a testament to the growing power of Asian American and in particular Indian American voters, this had been said by the Makhija after the elections.

On this statement Makhija said that, “Our experince in Georgia created a blueprint for Democratic success in states once considered out of reach: build a broad-based, multi ethnic coalition and early with deep organising efforts and culturally competent messaging invest in each community.
