Improve Your Workforce Management with Bluetooth Beacon
by Lansitec Technology Provide unique tracking solutionsA beacon is a tiny Bluetooth radio transmitter, powered by batteries. Bluetooth Beacon is similar to a lighthouse in functionality. These tiny hardware devices constantly transmit Bluetooth Low Energy signals. Bluetooth permits smartphones to be capable of scanning and displaying these signals. These could be placed on real estate properties, amusement parks, storefronts, events, and other public venues to broadcast contextually-relevant advertisements and notifications.
It is necessary to understand the difference between classic Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy to appreciate BLE beacons. Classic Bluetooth uses high power and transmits to long ranges, which is a match for Bluetooth headsets and speakers. Bluetooth Low Energy transfers fewer data over a smaller range, hence consuming much less power. It sends small amounts of data at regular intervals of time. Bluetooth beacons can also be deployed on mobile objects and detected and located by fixed BLE-enabled sensors, which can be useful in asset tracking scenarios.

It is a small, versatile, and low-power Bluetooth transmitter that can be detected by wireless devices like BLE-enabled smartphones. Beacon badge can be deployed in fixed positions, such as mounted on walls or structures, or placed on mobile assets, to provide location references for indoor positioning applications. It allows anybody to connect with a BLE-enabled application using their smartphone or other embedded devices. Bluetooth beacons can be used to find a device’s location and deliver relevant content, such as documents, videos, apps, and more, or offer guidance concerning the time or location of the customer, remain users informed and engaged.
Most of the beacons have long-lasting internal batteries that operate over multiple years or can be powered via a connection like USB. This technology is typically cheaper to produce than other RF technologies, resulting in small, low-cost, low-maintenance hardware options that can be tailored for deployments that fit your unique needs. Few beacons go beyond BLE and incorporate additional technologies such as accelerometers or temperature sensors for enhanced results.
Bluetooth Low Energy Positioning with Beacons
BLE beacons frequently pulse out BLE signals. All these signals can be identified by surrounding devices, including smartphones and BLE-enabled sensors. Installed in fixed positions throughout an indoor space, the signal continuously broadcasted by the beacon contains its unique identifier. This code is sent out periodically, along with other data, depending on the Bluetooth beacon communication protocol being used. A mobile phone or another wireless device that is enabled with a dedicated app or pre-configured service, when in range of the beacon, will receive and check the signal from the beacon in a user-friendly approach or send this data to a server in a server-centric approach.
The
identification between one beacon and a device can enable proximity-based
location services that determine whether a beacon and device are in the range
of each other. With numerous Bluetooth
beacon strategically placed throughout an indoor space, communication
between three or more beacons and a wireless device can be used to position the
device via RSSI multilateration. Based on the application, the determined
location of the device can trigger a specific action or be leveraged for a variety
of applications or services.
