Ostomy patients often suffer due to the problems caused by their pouching systems and associated accessories. Handling numerous Ostomy supplies and simultaneously maintaining hygiene make it extremely challenging. One key accessory that can help a patient who is having issues with their pouching system is an Ostomy Belt. The ostomy belt is used to support the ostomy pouch and offer a bit more security for the patients. Many of the ostomy pouches come with a strap to attach the belt to each side of the pouch and then the patient wraps the belt around their waist.

It is important to remember, that although ostomy belts can be very helpful and create a more secure pouching system for a patient, they are not always necessary. But an ostomy belt can be a very good option for many patients. It is possible that ostomy belts could create longer wear time saving the patient money and decreasing the frequency of changes in their skin barrier and ostomy pouch. Though there has been no study conducted to prove that belts actually do increase wear time. Therefore, if the belt is loosely fastened or gets disturbed due to physical activities, there is a chance of the pouch getting removed from the skin barrier. Although, it is not mandatory to use a belt, they do provide an additional layer of security to hold the bags in place.

Several manufacturers, including: ConvaTec, Hollister, Coloplast and Marlen produce effective belts for the ease of the patients. A variety of belts can be found in the markets that are specifically designed to hold the colostomy bags snuggly around the patient’s abdomen. Most belts go around the waist holding the pouch tightly in place. Some of the belts are wider and some patients prefer these wider belts, due to the fact that they create less pressure on the abdomen than some of the thinner diameter belts.

Always try to select the colostomy bag support belt that makes you feel comfortable after wearing it tightly around the stomach after eating heavy food. After eating, your belly tends to expand and if the belt is not very flexible or stretchable, you would feel suffocated and the tightness in the pouch could result in unwanted damage to it. Proper protection of the stoma requires that the belt associated with the pouch remains tightly fixed and has additional space for holding the pouch instead of keeping it pressed against your stomach. Most belts available in the market have a small pouch that holds the colostomy bag while the belt goes around the waist to fasten it tightly to the right place. This allows the patient to easily breathe and remain physically active without worrying about the bag bursting due to pressure.
