Hurdles faced by Women leaders and how to eliminate them

by Alessandra Wall Executive Coaching For Women

The gender gaps that exist in leadership are very evident. It is also evident that women are doing their part by getting educated and staying on equal fronts at the workplace. But the persistence of the under-representation of women in leadership positions has different reasoning to itself. Many factors can be attributed to the workplace for inherent biases and the lack of equal opportunity or promotion to women employees. But a large number of factors can also be attributed to internal factors for women. The heart of the matter is that women face unique and different challenges when progressing, and that is why they require specific coaching. Many times women leaders themselves are left unaware of the internal factors restricting them. Leadership coaching can help women leaders to face and effectively tackle these challenges.

5 Hurdles Women Leaders Face in Organizations - PPCaD Instittute

Let us first look in detail some of the prominent hurdles faced by women in leadership.

  1. Unequal treatment

Unequal treatment faced by women is one of the most prominent obstacles at the workplace. Although this is more of an institutional problem, women can also learn to handle it when subjected to such treatment. They can be made aware of their rights so as to ensure that the trend of unequal treatment at their respective workplaces changes to a better and equal opportunity environment.

  1. Mentorship

Most women do not seek opportunities on their own due to the lack of effective guidance. Many times all they require is development and support from women leadership coachings which will guide them towards carving their way to potential leadership positions.

  1. Inherent biases

Probably the biggest hurdles in the career progression of women are the biases they face. These biases can be based on the capability of women against their male counterparts even if women are better skilled and qualified. Also, women who claim their share as a matter of right are perceived as harsh. Although it is difficult to change inherent biases but a proper strategic approach might avoid adverse effects.

  1. Effective Communication

Women often display signs of hesitation more than their male counterparts. This can have historical reasons such as the way they have been brought up. Fear of criticism is also a fundamental reason for the lack of effective communication. Leadership coaching can help tackle such problems and increase efficiency in communication.

  1. Tenacious Approach

Survival and progression at a workplace largely depend on the firm approach of women leaders. It is very crucial to be determined and firm on the decisions that have been taken even when pressure mounts upon them. Effective women leadership coaching can help build this confidence and formulate better approaches.

Conclusion

Women leaders are fully capable and qualified to take over important leadership roles if the above-mentioned obstacles are tackled and solved. Leadership coaching can contribute positively to career progression.
