How To Take Care Post Radiation Therapy?
by Shifali Sharma Shifali SharmaRadiation therapy is one of the
most common cancer treatments these days. Its side effects may vary from person
to person depending on the body part that is treated. In most cases, these side
effects get worse as the treatment proceeds and may continue for weeks or
months after the treatment. It is therefore important to discuss with the
doctor about what to expect post radiation therapy and then prepare
accordingly. Here are some tips on how to take care post therapy:
1-General Care: It is very
important to eat a healthy and balanced diet, rich in proteins and calories, to
speed up the recovery process. Drinking plenty of water and other fluids to
keep the body hydrated is also important. If you plan to take any supplements
or vitamins, it is best to consult your healthcare providers first. Taking good
rest is important as it is very likely to feel tired post treatment.
2- Skin Care: The treatment area
may itch, peel and look sunburned so it is best to wash it with warm water
only. Before choosing any cream or lotion, consult your doctor as he will
recommend you the best one that will suit your skin. It is best to avoid sun
exposure as the skin becomes extra sensitive during the treatment and hence
needs extra protection.
3- Care for Vomiting, diarrhea
and nausea: Expert Dr.
Sidharth Sahni of Apollo, one of the top surgical oncologists in Delhi,
believes that taking smaller meals at regular intervals and drinking clear
fluids can significantly help in dealing with problems like vomiting and nausea
post radiation therapy. Go for low-fiber, soft and bland foods in the initial
weeks and avoid eating spicy and fried food.
4- Dealing with Fatigue: It is
very common to feel tired during and after the treatment. You must take eight
hours of sleep at night and a few rest breaks or naps during the day. A short
walk early morning or in the evening can be of great help in making you feel
better. If you can exercise without exerting too much on your body, that can
also help in dealing with fatigue.
