How to Spot Counterfeit GM Parts?

by Shaun Carey GmOutletParts

When it comes to our vehicle, we do everything within our limits to purchase only genuine GM auto parts online. But that doesn’t mean you won’t get duped by untrustworthy sellers.

The market is filled with a significant number of counterfeit GM parts, meaning the chances of you receiving a counterfeit product is quite high. But thankfully, there are ways to easily spot a counterfeit GM part.

In this article, we will share some tips to do the same. But, before that, let’s understand –

What are counterfeit parts?

Counterfeit auto parts are vehicle parts that look and function like genuine auto parts but create various complications down the line.

Counterfeit products aren’t designed in accordance with GM standards. This means there is a high chance of premature part failure, system breakdowns, and even vehicle safety issues.

They are packaged and designed to mislead the consumers intentionally. They have duplicated trademarks that are slightly different than the original, so the consumers don’t notice the differences easily.

How to spot counterfeit GM parts?

Here are some effective tips to spot counterfeit GM parts even if you aren’t a pro:

1- Inspect the packaging

Always cross-question the installer if you can view the part’s packaging before the installation is initiated.

If you notice the packaging to be flimsy, lacks the brand name or logo, or has a name printed that is similar but not exactly as the brand, then you can be assured of having a counterfeit product at your hand.

You can always compare the packaging with the actual packaging, and trust us, you will find different use of colors, artwork, and fonts. They all may seem almost similar to the actual product packaging.

2- Compare prices

If you are getting a GM motor part at an extremely lower price, then that should raise some concerns. A few dollar discounts are acceptable. Anything that seems too good to be true should make you suspicious.

Counterfeit parts may use low-quality materials and have no FNC coating, therefore decreasing the product’s durability significantly.

3- Insist on genuine parts

When it comes to buying genuine GM parts, visual representation isn’t always enough to spot the genuine parts from the fake ones. Always insist on receiving GM parts from genuine and authorized sellers.

If you have your doubts, ensure to purchase the auto parts on your own and provide the same to the mechanic for further installation or replacement. This way, you can prevent getting duped and know what your vehicle is actually installed with.
