How to Prepare for Installing a New Wood Fence

by Kevin Smith Author

Your home isn't complete without a fence. It's simplest way to protect your home, and it's an effective means of keeping kids and pets where they belong: on your property. A wood fence, doesn't just protect your home. It's an attractive addition that beautifies your yard while providing a little extra curb appeal. If you're considering wood fence installation in Orlando, FL, here are some steps you can take to prepare in advance.

Know Your Property Line

If you're like most people, you probably have a pretty good idea where your property line is, but not really. The reality is, you've probably assumed where your property line is for years without knowing its precise location. This is problematic since if you build a fence only inches onto someone else's property, you could be ordered to tear it down. Better find out where your boundaries are in the local council map, or leave it in the hands of a professional fence installer.

Check with Your Neighbors

If you share a boundary with your neighbor, you'll have to consult with them first. This will keep you in their good graces, while preventing any misunderstandings from taking place. Also check with your neighborhood association. Some associations have strict rules regarding fence style as well as height. If you're not satisfied with their options, one way to get around them is to build one fence along the edge of your property following their codes, then a second fence around your pool or part of your yard for additional privacy.

Remove Obstacles

Anything that gets in the way of the fence installer and the fence line can make their job a whole lot more difficult. Walk the length of your property line and remove any rocks, or long branches that block access. If there are any tree stumps near the fence location, those will have to be removed as well.

Look for Utility Installations

A wood fence will have to start a couple feet underground, so it's possible they could interfere with your utility lines if you're not careful. Check your home's property plans to find the location of sewer and water lines. The last thing you want to do is get on your neighbors' by building a new fence that cuts off their water supply.

Once everything is prepared, all that's left is choosing the right company to provide the wood fence installation in Orlando, FL, and you're well on your way to a new fence.
