How to Play Your First Scale on Piano or Keyboard

by Pravin Dwivedi Digital Marketing Expert

Has your child developed a liking for playing the keyboard? Do you wish to help your baby learn it better? Read this blog to help your child easily learn keyboard playing.

Music is a soothing balm for every soul and there is nothing better than your child showing interest in learning to play a musical instrument, especially when it is a piano. In this blog, we will discuss how you can guide your child to play his/her first scale on a keyboard

Know Your Keys

Before we begin, let us first try to get familiar with the keys on your keyboard. During the keyboard online classes at PiggyRide, the first thing we do is to teach the child about the notes on the piano. Observe your piano. You will notice a pattern of two black keys, three black keys, and two black keys with white keys between them over and over again. These keys are notes (each note represents a pitch of sound).

To keep things simple for your first scale on the piano, we are going to start with the white notes only.

The notes on a piano are alphabetically arranged from A to G that repeat in cycles. However, note C is located at the beginning of the cycle. One cycle consists of 8 notes: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, and C. In this blog, we will focus on only one cycle containing.

Number Your Fingers

To learn keyboard playing, you should know which finger to use for a particular note. There is a simple way to remember this. It is the finger numbering system. Starting from your thumb, number the fingers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. This means your thumb will be 1 and the little finger will be 5.

Now, before you start playing, it is better to get accustomed to the keyboard. Here is a little exercise to get you started:

Place the fingers of your right hand over one note each. Now, try to play one note at a time by transferring the weight between your fingers. Do it ten times and then repeat the same with your left hand.

The C Major Scale

C Major is the most common scale and it is perfect for beginners as there are only 8 notes. It is great for kids who have just developed keyboard playing interests because they can play it even with one hand.

Let us start learning the C major scale by breaking the scale into 7 simple steps:

  1. Find C on the keyboard. Confused? Here is a trick: Sit in front of the keyboard. Look at the black notes. We discussed a pattern of two and three black notes, remember? The white note on the left side of the two black notes is note C.
  2. Now, use your dominant hand and place finger 1 (the thumb) on C, finger 2 (the pointer finger) on D, and finger 3 (the middle finger) on E.
  3. Try to play each note separately. Repeat this process slowly 10 times. When you are confident enough, you can speed up the process.

These are the three basic notes of C major. Once you master these three, you can move on to learn the remaining five.

4. We ended with finger 3 on note E. Now you have to pay more F. If you wish to find more F without counting, it is located on the left side of the three black keys. The better alternative to play this note is through finger 1 (your thumb). The simple method of doing so is by the thumb tucking technique. Just tuck your thumb under finger 3 (the middle finger) and play F. Practice a bit! It’s easy!

5. Now, play note G with finger 2 (the pointer finger), note A with finger 3 (the middle finger), note B with finger 4 (the ring finger), and lastly, note C with finger 5 (the little finger).

6. Take your time and practice each of these notes separately. As you become more confident, try to speed up the process.

7. Now, play all eight notes simultaneously. You can start slow and gradually speed up as you gain confidence.
