How To Pack Small Kitchen Appliances For A Move: See This Expert Checklist

by PRC Agency PR

Zip code changes and kitchen tools are two things Americans tend to describe as "life-changing." And unfortunately, those two things are harder to mix than you might expect.

Appliances like microwaves and coffee makers have always been kitchen staples. But during the pandemic, when dining out was limited, Americans bought specialized appliances like electric griddles, bread machines, and more in record numbers. We've come to depend upon them, and bringing them with us when we move is a no-brainer.

Many have discovered that packing up these oddly shaped devices is harder than putting a round peg in a square hole. But never fear. The relocation experts at Movers.com share their tips and tricks for packing small kitchen appliances in a new moving guide.

Market Trends

Panini presses, espresso makers and rice cookers became staples in many households as restaurant traffic was restricted. Sales of small appliances were 8 percent higher in March 2020 than in March 2019, according to data from Applied Marketing Science.

While the extreme surge was temporary, annual growth rates are holding steady at around 4 percent annually, according to data from Straits Research. The market size was valued at $16.56 billion in 2021, statistics show, and it is expected to grow to $24 billion by 2030. Clearly, we love our pressure cookers and we won’t leave them behind when we move.

Packing Hints

These small appliances seem simple to pack, in theory, according to the guide. In reality, however, many are oddly shaped and fit awkwardly in anything besides their original packaging. If the original packaging is unavailable, the guide suggests using packing paper and small to medium-sized boxes.

The guide recommends appliances be cleared of crumbs and grease before packing. Any parts that are safe to wash should be scrubbed, and clean, dry appliances should be disassembled and any detachable parts removed. Specific packing instructions are detailed further in the guide, but generally, Movers.com recommends being conservative with the number of items packed into each box and liberal with packing paper to prevent shifting during the move.

When Tips Aren't Enough

If the process is too tedious or time-consuming, you can hire a full-service moving provider help to handle all the preparation and packing. While full-service moves are more expensive, they are sometimes necessary if you have limited time or mobility.

In addition to moving guides, Movers.com offers recommendations for top area movers as well as obligation-free quotes. The company maintains a network of screened moving companies and checks each business monthly for complaints to make sure customer satisfaction remains high.
