by Taylor David Boss

The winter is coming and that means the snow is coming. It is really good time for photography lovers. Just like I written in another article, extreme weather create great shooting. Snow, of course, is a kind of extreme weather. But it is not as easy as you think, for example, some shoots have impure problems in color. Below are the suggestion and solution of mine, maybe it is helpful for you.

When shooting snow works, it is a common problem that the snow color is impure or looks gray.

How to make snow color more pure?

While shooting snow, we often see the shooting of the snow with color gray, not translucent, looks not pure enough. This is because, although we metering light by the snow, the camera will still think the highlight part of the picture is too much in mistaken and it will reduce exposure to balance the picture. This resulted the white is not white enough. Therefore, we have to increase the Exposure Compensation 1/3 or 1, so the snow shooting out will be white and transparent.

How let snow more transparent by contrast?

There is a trick that we can fully demonstrate the pure white of the snow by using contrast of the details or color. Several common colors that are easy to highlight the color of the snow: red and yellow. Red is the most contrasting colors that can prominent snow white. We can look for little items that have this color, keep an eye on them and they will be the great materials. It is worthy to mention when the red appears on the screen, in order to keep the snow color, it may appear to purplish or pink. Therefore, we can use the RAW as the storing format at shooting time, so that we can adjust the hue and saturation of red.

How to let snow color look more beautiful?

Some photography lover may feel that their works are always a little worse than they expect, don’t satisfied with the tone of the works, and always feel that their works not great enough. In the case of not using the RAW format and follow-up editing, we can use the color style of the camera to adjust the screen.

Basically, most SLR cameras and micro-single-camera provide different styles of shooting. We can choose by our subject. Generally Portrait, Landscape and bright mode will be very obvious. But also we can go into the secondary menu, and adjust sharpness, hue, and saturation.

Adjust the snow color in Lightroom.

Lightroom can adjust color easily. We feel that the original work is gray so we can modify and repair the image with the modify function.

First set the white balance to automatic in the Gallery, a preliminary look more normal color of snow, "Edit Photo" menu, adjust white balance to the blue end of a little pull, and increase the exposure of the screen about 1/2. It will be a great photo.

Appropriate to adjust the saturation and vividness will the work looks crisp and clean. Of course, you can adjust it depended on your needs.
