How to Make a Habit Out of Prayer - Salvation Garden

How to Make a Habit Out of Prayer

As a Christian you are bound to honor God through prayer by making a habit out of the act of praying. But to most people this would appear to be a chore. It’s easy to fall into this self-defeating trap where you know this is something you must do but hardly have the time. We often forget that daily prayer is an act of positive reinforcement and it makes us more receptive to signs and cues from up above.

The second misgiving that people hold about prayer is that if you don’t mean it you’re better off not saying it. That its no use indulging in empty rituals and that sticking to rules defeats the purpose of the larger objective.

Both of the objections mentioned in the previous paragraph are valid. To answer these objections we must go back to the reasons we offer prayers to a higher power in the first place.

Why Do We Pray?

We offer prayers to a higher power because as denizens of this world we are constantly besieged by situations and environments that we cannot control. We don’t pray because we are afraid of these unknowns. We pray to seek the fortitude to be able to deal with these situations. We pray to seek validation from an all-knowing, all-encompassing God.

As Christians we are called upon to partake in the special objective of leading exemplary lives in this constant struggle against illness, despair, despotism, anarchy, and chaos. We are called upon to sacrifice and help fellowmen in need. We are called upon to bask in the righteousness of Christ and to believe in the redemption that is available to man despite the many trepidations and moral breakdowns that our society is prone to.

Praying in the Christian Way

As always, it is Jesus, who is our highest patron and example. As the apostles and saints have frequently observed, there is none purer in spirit, so simple in attribute, yet so full of conviction in the belief that love and peace eternal are possible and waiting for us in the afterlife.

To this end, he teaches us to pray in his own words:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be
thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we
forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us
not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen!

Here are a tips that our interviews with people in the Salvation Garden prayer community gleaned in order to build a habit out of praying daily.

Accept your weaknesses and wrongs in front of Jesus as you would in front of a friend.
Confide in Jesus.
Make a promise to talk to God daily.
It’s OK to increase the frequency of your conversations with God but make it a habit to remember him once every day.
Read the Bible or the works of a well-known Christian philosopher.
Establish a pattern.
Join a praying community.

Remember that increasing dialogue between you and God is as much about joy as it is about habit.

To find more information about prayer and the life of Jesus Christ we recommend that you look up the most prominent biblical sites still existing in the modern territories of Israel. People have had their prayers answered for centuries in some of the churches in the holy lands. Explore the website for more information.
