How to Improve Self-esteem

by Manuel B. Agent Smartlipo

Self-esteem is defined as a "realistic respect for or favorable impression of oneself." It describes the overall characteristics of oneself. Self-esteem is not fixed since everything changes. People's beliefs can change due to circumstance and experience. A commendation of a person or receiving an award will increase one's self-esteem. A high self-esteem brings positivity in a person. However, a job loss or broken relationship may result in low self-esteem. A low self-esteem brings negative beliefs to a person and it lets a person focus on his weaknesses and mistakes in life. If you have a high self-esteem, it can absorb life's challenges and can urge you to move on and bounce back to life.

Having a high self-esteem also means having a positive self-image. A positive self-image affects all aspects of our being – physically, mentally, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. Improving self-image takes time and practice.

Here are tips on how to improve self-image:

  • Take a self-image inventory. Be honest and know which areas you need to address. List your strengths and weaknesses as a person. This list will inform you which areas you need to enhance and change. Write down all that you can think of so you'll get a clearer knowledge of your self-image.

  • Set realistic and measurable goals. Identify your goals on how to improve your self-image. Make it concrete and measurable so you have some benchmark of success. Goals should be realistic so you wouldn't be discouraged. The clearer the goal is, the more chances you will know how to reach that goal. Realistic goals are more achievable than unreasonable ones.

  • Learn to love yourself. Accepting yourself for your totality is a big chunk on improving self-image. Everybody makes mistakes whether its your family, friends, or boss. Nobody is perfect so be gentle with yourself. If you don't love yourself, how can someone else do? Aside from accepting yourself, flaws and all, you should also be open to new opportunities, viewpoints, and friendships. These are part of knowing oneself and growth.

  • Build-up your body-image. Body image is part of self-image. If you feel good with your body, you feel more confident and beautiful. Building a positive body image doesn't happen overnight. It means changing the physical body, as well as changing how we think, feel and react to our body. Our body changes as we grow older. Different events in our lives such as marriage, pregnancy, death of someone dear, or job loss, affect the body. Weight loss procedures such as liposuction and cosmetic surgery procedures like SmartLipo can alter the body. SmartLipo can help contour the body and tighten skin tissues after a weight loss surgery. There are many treatments available for weight loss, body contouring, slimming, shaping, etc. Enhancing body appearance through technology can help improve self-image.

There are more ways to improve self-image. Doing some of these things can give you positive results in the long run. Remember, improving oneself takes time, so be patient. Don't get discouraged at the first roadblock; instead, focus on improving your self-image. Before you know it, you already have a good disposition and outlook in life.
