How to identify authentic Italian olive oil?

by Ranny Watson Blogger
Olive oil is one of the most common products used in cooking nowadays. It's not very surprising considering the tasks it makes it easier including sorting, selecting, picking, kneading, pressing, and crushing. But there's a catch.

How does an ordinary customer identify the Italian olive oil they use is legit? As a matter of fact, the United States can be a victim of producers not following authentic olive oil rules. The oil you receive can be tainted and might not deliver the expected benefits because of less concentration of authentic ingredients. So, these steps help you ensure the purchase of genuine Italian olive oil.

The producer makes a difference

It's your responsibility to look up for the producer. Everyone nowadays has access to the internet for this research. The thing you need to check out is the information about their olive grove, achievements, type of production, and the processes involved. The basic research will never harm anyone in picking genuine Sicilian extra virgin olive oil.

Go through the label carefully

The lesson you must always remember is that reading the label is essential. Some olive oils sold through the shelves of many departmental stores contain a mix of olives from other countries like Morocco, Tunisia, and Spain. And these things are not hidden from the label. Detect the origin of its ingredients and then choose a bottle even if purchasing online. Also, take a look at the manufacturing year and the date must not suggest anything more than 12 months old.

Ensure that Olive is the ingredient

An extension of the previous point, it's all mentioned on the label. It's pretty easily visible on the outside of the bottle. You can differentiate between a plane olive oil and its mixture with soybean or sunflower oil. So, the label is all you can read at first glance.

Be careful about the color game

The colors of the oil and the bottle containing it are crucial. The darker color of the bottle will keep the oil intact for longer, just like wine. On the other hand, the color of the oil must be in between emerald green and grass green. From an experienced buyer's guide, the yellow color is something you should avoid.

Finding a trusted seller

There are some sellers which suggest that their olive oil is Umbrian but actually it's not. How many times have you faced such dishonesty? You're never going to know. You always need a well-reputed and well-informed seller. But how do you detect one? Well, if you visit Italy, never miss a chance to visit a producer's grove. It's a soothing place to be. Otherwise, there are online stores that actually prove that the oil is authentic and exactly what they described.

Taste some

The concluding step is pretty straightforward. Don't pour it in a glass or sip it, instead use a loaf of bread and your fingers would also do the job. Just like any other consumer, be a hundred percent sure of what an Italian oil tastes like and you're good to go. If it's 100% authentic, you'll be licking your fingers.

That's pretty much it for the steps to recognize and detect an authentic Italian olive oil bottle. You can expect satisfactory results if the ingredients are sufficient and original.
