How to get back into working out after a break
Sometimes due to any
unforeseen circumstances or personal/ professional reasons, we tend to get
derailed from our regular workout efforts. We also lack motivation, which is a
common occurrence while most times we are onto a strict time constraint be it
for family or work and so on. Hence, if you have fallen off the exercise
bandwagon for some time now and are struggling to get back on it, start by
doing the following things to get yourself back to enjoy the exercise.
1.
Finding the motivation
back
Motivation plays the
most important role in getting back to your workout schedule after a long
intended or non-intended break. The thing about fitness is that it must come
from within and you have to want it for yourself rather than being forced upon.
It starts my asking the right questions like why you need to get back rather
than counting on the benefits straightaway. It is also advisable to see your
doctor and physiotherapist before you wish to get back to your workout routine
especially after a long break.
2. Start by doing something you Enjoy
Post this, you need to
identify things you love doing and enjoying. If working out has become a chore
and a drag, making excuses gets easy. Find something you really love, such as
brisk walks around the neighborhood, playing in the ground with your mates,
bike riding, yoga, kickboxing, or dancing, so you look forward to working out.
Think of it as a “me time,” not something you are forcing yourself to do.
3.
Setting up goals
When you start enjoying
yourself again and are easing back into your workout routine, start setting
small goals to keep yourself focused and determined. It is important to always
remember that you can’t progress further without mastering day one. Hence, take
one day at a time and take your time slowly to get into the groove and routine.
4.
Remember Why Exercise Is Important
Keeping the many
wonderful and varied reasons to work out frequently, such as reducing weight, optimal
heart health and blood circulation, increased energy levels, and reduced risk
of a wide range of diseases, provides the inspiration you need when you “just
don’t feel like exercising.” Not only will you lose weight and enjoy a
significantly-healthier body, you will feel great and get a serious boost in
confidence.
5.
Work Out With A Friend
To have company while
starting to working out again with a friend or family member is a wonderful way
to stay focused and engaged. The fact of knowing that you would be meeting
someone known at the gym holds you accountable even on days you don’t
immediately feel up to it. It is also a way to spend quality time with some of
your favorite people and catch up on each other’s lives. Yet another fantastic
benefit? It makes your workouts even more fun!
And always remember, everyone has an off day, just don’t turn it
into a habit!
