How to get an online internship?

by Adam Smith Professional Digital Marketer

Submitting applications on Job Portals. Cold emailing hundreds of HRs. Didn't hear back?

Searching for a job in the 21st century is not easy. Sending applications and waiting for them to respond isn't working for most of us.

First and foremost

Identify your field of interest: Find out which area you want to get into out of these major categories: Tech, Communications, Data, Business, Finance etc.

It can be multiple fields as you can be a business analyst in a tech company. So, interests can also be intersecting.

Where to look for online internships: If you are looking for public companies look out the Public: Fortune 500 companies. If you are looking for private companies check the Unicorn List. This list out the amazing companies with a value of over one billion dollars. You can look for the startups on Angel.co. Or you can use LinkedIn, Internshala, and other job hunt platforms to find the best suitable internships for you. Various companies have their career page so make sure to check internships that are open.

Forming Networks: Without networks the world could be very vague and ambiguous so making connections always helps. Connect with someone who knows about the opportunities. You can reach out to the professionals in that company and ask them for the available opportunities at their company. LinkedIn is very useful to form connections and cold messaging is always worth a try although the recipient might not always reply because of other engagements. Be professional and respectful and don’t promptly ask for a referral.

Take advice from your seniors and learn from their experiences. It will provide a huge boost to get to know the process.

Be prepared with your resume and cover letter: Prepare a tailored resume according to the job description and do attach a cover letter. Do include the keywords important for a particular job role. You can find these keywords on the web. This helps when your resume is shortlisted using a software which is programmed to look for these specific keywords. Use pdf format instead of doc or docx.

Check your Email frequently so you don’t miss any updates.

With so many internships you applied to it is necessary to have a framework to track all the applications. You can use excel sheet with following columns to fill for all the internships you applied to:

Name of the Company: Fill the name of the company here.

Position: Fill the position for which you applied for.

Skills: Track here the required skills of that particular internship.

Deadline: What is the deadline to submit the application?

URL: Fill here the URL of the internship listing page.

Contact: Fill here the necessary HR contact or mail IDs.

Status: Check for the status and update the status in this column if you hear something from the employee's end.

Applied Date: Fill here the date on which you applied for the internship.

Comments: This is also an essential column where you can keep track of the feedback the interviewer gave to you and what you wish you would have done to give a better interview.

There is a phrase that you might have heard before- “Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket”. So, you should not always apply to the same five companies to which many other students are applying to. Apply to many more others. Companies always look for candidates with previous internship offers so it is necessary to have internship experience to make your resume stand out from the various other resumes. Don’t lose hope easily after applying to 5-6 internships. Just keep going and update your resume as you gain and work over your skills. You will surely get one that is out there for you.
