How to Fireproof Walls

by Thomas Miller Writer

No wall is truly fireproof, though walls can be fire resistant, meaning that the materials and assembly method used in their construction help them stay intact longer than standard walls when exposed to a fire.

Although people fear many things, facing a raging fire is about as bad as it gets. Unfortunately, thousands of people suffer serious injuries or worse because of this very threat. The good news – something as simple as a fire-resistant board could make the difference between life and death.

There’s also a fire- and blast-resistant boards, which protects from fire and flying debris associated with an explosion. While this is beneficial to many businesses, it’s especially helpful for those that deal with unstable substances or materials. Not only that, but a board such as this can serves to protect during a terrorist attack.

Ways to Make Your Business Safer With a Fire-resistant Boards and More

There’s no question that a gypsum wall board offers basic fire protection. However, you have additional ways to fireproof the walls in your business. Here are some of those:

Fire and Blast-resistant Board - DuraSteel

The top product on the market, DuraSteel, comes in a standard size sheet that measures 1200 x 2500 x 9.5mm, approximately 4 x 8-feet x 3/8-inch thick. It also has a G90/Z275 galvanized finish. However, you can opt for a board with a 316-2B stainless steel finish if you need increased corrosion resistance.

Regardless of the face sheet material, this type of fire-resistant board is has the metal face sheets mechanically bonded to a fiber-reinforced cement core. That makes it incredibly strong, ideal for both harsh industrial and outdoor environments. The board is also moisture and impact-resistant. Best of all, it’s easy to install and maintain.

Calcium Silicate Fire Protection Board

Another material option for constructing walls, that can also be used to protect structural steel members, is to use UL Listed calcium silicate boards.  The following boards are UL Listed for use in assemblies with ratings up to 3 hours fire resistance.

  • Promat L – This calcium silicate fire protection board is a lighter-density version of Pro H. However, it still provides optimal protection. It comes in a standard 1250mm x 2500mm size that’s 30mm thick.
  • Promat H – This board is medium density. It comes in the same standard size as the Promat L product but with more options for thickness. These include 12, 15, 20 and 25mm thick.

Exterior Materials

Even the materials used on the exterior of your business will help to keep a fire under control until first responders arrive. In this case, remove any wood and vinyl siding. Replace that with brick, stucco, concrete, one of the boards above, or another type of non-combustible material.
