How To Decide On The Right Tile Adhesive

by Philip Smith Inbound Marketing Manager

There are two materials used for tile installation – thin set mortar and tile adhesive. You can use either depending on your tile material and application type. If you are considering using tile adhesive, this blog offers a few tips to help you decide on the right tile adhesive for your project. Check out the following subsections –

The Type of Adhesive –

When you search for tile adhesive on the Internet or at a local supplier, you find two options – ready to use paste (which comes in packets or buckets) and powder (which you have to mix with water as per instructions on the product label). The first one helps you save time and efforts of mixing it. And second one saves you cost.

The Color –

Tile adhesives are available in white and gray colors. You can choose them based on the color of tile grout or your design idea. But when you use dark color tiles, it would be wise to gray adhesive. And when you are using white or light tiles, then you should use white adhesive.

The Project –

The type of adhesive also depends on where you are going to tile. For example, if you are tiling your bathroom floor and wall, then it is advisable to use water-resistant tile adhesive. Similarly, if you are tiling outdoor, then you should use an adhesive that makes a suitable choice for your outdoor settings.

The Subfloor –

There are different type of subfloor, such as concrete, plywood board, and cement board. So, the type of adhesive you should use should be decided on the basis of subfloor type too. For concrete subfloor, it is ideal to use thin set mortar. For bathroom, using epoxy or waterproof adhesive would be a great choice. Similarly, for kitchen, outdoors, living area, and high traffic areas of your home, the tile adhesive should be chosen wisely.
